Cerberus 302 Posted June 7, 2005 Sir Freddie Laker, of 1970s Skytrain fame, will be 83 this year. Famous enough, I would suggest, though I can't vouch for his state of health. Apologies if he's been mentioned before, but I did try the search engine, for what it's worth.

Apologies if he's been mentioned before, but I did try the search engine, for what it's worth. Last I heard Freddie was running an airline in the Bahamas or somewhere similar. Doing OK and making a living. Great guy, I wish him well.

Cerberus 302 Posted June 9, 2005 For some reason, I was almost certain that Cliff Michelmore was deceased, but a quick google has failed to uncover evidence of that - maybe I was thinking of someone else. And I was at school with a nephew of Harry Rabinowitz - Jason I think his name was.
VSBfromH 74 Posted June 9, 2005 For some reason, I was almost certain that Cliff Michelmore was deceased Yes, as I hinted, some of these names make you think to yourself "I'm sure he popped it ages ago!". Good ol' Cliff, eh! Karl Malden (b. 1912) is also giving us a fine run for our money!
Guest Guest Posted June 9, 2005 For some reason, I was almost certain that Cliff Michelmore was deceased, but a quick google has failed to uncover evidence of that - maybe I was thinking of someone else. . You are probably thinking of Cliff Mitchelmore's wife Jean Metcalfe , ( radio and tv star ) who died in 2000
lospalmas7 12 Posted June 9, 2005 Comedian Eric Sykes is "deaf, has failing eyesight, has suffered a stroke and undergone a heart bypass operation" according to the BBC. I'm not sure if he is famous enough internationally but he was the highest-paid scriptwriter of 1950s Britain and did the voiceover for the Teletubbies! VSBfromH 74 Posted June 10, 2005 Comedian Eric Sykes is "deaf, has failing eyesight, has suffered a stroke and undergone a heart bypass operation" according to the BBC. I'm not sure if he is famous enough internationally but he was the highest-paid scriptwriter of 1950s Britain and did the voiceover for the Teletubbies! The man is a genius. He would probably be much more famous than he is, except that he has tended to save his best efforts for work for which others would get the plaudits. He seems far too humble to accept well-deserved credit. Spike Milligan owed a huge debt to him, not only for all the work they did together, but also for his unbending support during Spike's many periods of doubt, depression and illness. I salute him and wish him good health for many years to come.

Tuber Mirum 125 Posted June 20, 2005 I know some people have problems with the search facility... You know those machines they have outside the bank where you put a card in the little slot and you are supposed to be able to withdraw money from your account? And you know quite a lot of the time they come up with a message like "your card is unreadable" or somesuch? But you know perfectly well (in spite of the bank's insidious attempts to sow seeds of doubt in your mind) that your card works perfectly well and it is in fact the machine that is malfunctioning? Don't you just hate that? I know I do.

Don't you just hate that? I know I do. I'll tell you what i hate. "And in this example there are no credit cards" Let's say you are in a supermarket. You get your usual groceries and your about to pay the cashier. You estimate in your mind how much your groceries may cost. Let's say you take out fifty dollars. Now the cashier asks for the amount of money to pay for the groceries. You give fifty but the cashier says fifty isen't enough and that the correct cost for that amount of groceries is {50.27}. That would break a dollar in which you may have needed. "They really needed that 27 cents"
