More Ideas & Possibles for 2005

Recommended Posts

Time to dust-off this old thread and give it a bit of an airing.

Came across this news article which lists plenty of well-know (and less well-known) folk who have or did have Hep. C.

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/n.../7190080.htm?1c

As you read through the people on this list, you will notice that the ones who have died seem to have succumbed to liver cancer, liver disease or liver failure. Liver transplants seem to be order of the day, and this operation does seem to give new life to a lot of these people. Anyway, food for thought!

This link in my previous post expires after a set number of viewings - so for those who are interested I have pasted the list below:

• Pamela Anderson: She is perhaps the best-known hepatitis C patient, if only because the former Baywatch star has such a flair for publicity. Her revelation last year that she had the disease prompted innumerable news stories.

• Naomi Judd: The former nurse and country singer has been one of the best-known hep C celebrities. She retired from the Judds, the duo with daughter Wynonna, in 1991. But she has since undergone treatment and become more active.

• Dusty Hill: The band ZZ Top stopped touring in 2000 because the bassist had hepatitis C. The band began touring again in 2002.

• Evel Knievel: The motorcycle daredevil had a liver transplant more than two years ago and later said doctors could find no trace of the virus in his blood.

• Chuck Negron: He's the former lead singer on such Three Dog Night classics as "Joy to the World."

• Larry Hagman: The television actor required a liver transplant in 1995.

• Phil Lesh: One of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, the bass player received a liver transplant several years ago.

• "Superstar" Billy Graham: The former WWF wrestling champion got a liver transplant last year. He thought he contracted the virus by being bled on during wrestling matches years ago.

• David Crosby: The rock star with a fabled history of drug abuse is touring again after receiving a liver transplant in 1995.

• Freddy Fender: The singer of such '70s hits as "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" suffers from several health problems, including hepatitis C.

• Jack Kevorkian: The retired pathologist, now serving a prison term for killing a man who had Lou Gehrig's disease, has hepatitis C, his lawyer says.

• Laurie Bembenek: The former Playboy bunny, whose conviction in a Milwaukee murder and later escape are chronicled in the book Run, Bambi, Run, is free now but suffers from hepatitis C.

• Rolf Benirschke: The former star kicker for the San Diego Chargers got the virus from a transfusion two decades ago. He has used his sports status to raise awareness about the disease.

• Linda Lovelace: The star of the 1972 porn film "Deep Throat" contracted the virus from a transfusion and had a liver transplant in 1987. She died in 2002 at age 53 after a car crash.

• Willie Dixon: The legendary bluesman was diagnosed with hepatitis C shortly before his death in 1992. He contracted the virus from transfusions in 1987.

• Mickey Mantle: The baseball great is thought to have contracted hepatitis C during a transfusion for a knee operation. He died of liver cancer in 1995.

• Stormie Jones: The 13-year-old died in 1990 six years after becoming the first person in the world to receive heart and liver transplants in a single operation. Hepatitis C damaged that liver, though, and before she died she received a second liver and treatment for the virus.

• Ken Kesey: The author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, who died of liver cancer in 2001, suffered from hepatitis C.

• James Earl Ray: The confessed assassin of Martin Luther King Jr. died in 1998 of liver disease after being infected with hepatitis C, probably in a 1981 blood transfusion he received after a prison stabbing.

• Allen Ginsberg: The poet laureate of the Beat Generation died in 1997 after battling hepatitis C for many years. He had terminal liver cancer.

• Lance Loud: The free-spirited son on public television's "An American Family" in 1971, he died in 2001 of liver failure caused by hepatitis C and HIV.

• Frank Reynolds: Experts speculated at the time that the newsman's death in 1983 was hastened by the virus later known as hepatitis C, which he may have contracted through a transfusion.

• Benito Mussolini: Did Il Duce, the World War II Italian dictator, have the disease? A new biography speculates that his chronic health problems -- stomach pain, fatigue and depression -- stemmed from an ulcer and a mild case of hepatitis C.

The list was from a US site - perhaps Russell's fame didn't spread across the Atlantic, but I agree, I think he did die of a Hep. strain - not sure which variety though.

there's also a recently discovered strain of the disease called "Hep-burn", which knocked off Audrey in 1993, and Kate in 2003, both correctly predicted by your friendly neighborhood DL committee.

Just a quick follow up to Cowboy Ronnie - the less severe form of the disease "Hep-worth" has been proven as non-life threatening.

David Hepworth, sad music journo, has been living with this condition for years...

What about Willie Rushden? Damn, he is already dead. I must be honest, I never even heard he had died ;)

I think it came as a bit of a shock to him as well - though I did hear he died of nothing serious.

Even if I knew what an 'abu' was, not sure I would want to suck a good looking one's cock, never mind an ugly one!

Although if it is some new method to diagnose prostate cancer, can someone point me in the direction of a good looking female doctor please

IIRC Mo Mowlam had chemotherapy for brain cancer in about '98, and I'd guess it's worked for her to have survived this long. She was on the radio a few weeks ago talking about Iraq, and sounded on good form.

As for Chris Stein, his weblog's here, but at a quick glance I can't see any mention of illness:

What's supposed to be wrong with him?

I seem to remember that the guitarist from Blondie has a life threatening disease a while back but was completely cured (hence the tours and everything recently). I also thought that Mo Mowlam was officially clear of the brain tumour.

Is this a new competition - name people who were ill but have got better?

For the record - if you will excuse that terrible pun:

It was right around this time also that Stein developed a rare skin disease, Pemphigus, which caused the guitarist to break out in blisters all over his body. While Stein was being treated for an elongated period in a NYC hospital (he would eventually recover fully), Blondie quietly disbanded.

A couple of names that have been bandied about before, but seem to be showing signs of death. I somehow stayed awake through three hours of "Troy" the other night and Peter O'Toole was looking frail to say the least. Figuring that must have been filmed a year ago, he's got to be a strong contender for next year.

Also read an interview with Richard Pryor, except he's apparently so unwell the guy had to interview him by e-mail. Good old Richard, still managed to get a couple of "motherf*(&ers" into his typed responses. Also seems resigned to his imminent demise.

Maybe we should see what the Pittsburgh Gazette thinks...

Ray Bradbury is a distinct possibility as well. He's aged, and his wife passed away last year - always a warning sign for people who have been married forever.

Speaking of that, Mrs. Reagan should be a candidate for '05 or '06. She spent her life taking care of Ronnie, his demise may be her death warrant.

A suggestion for next year,

85 year old jazz musician and inventor of the eponymous electric guitar. Still playing gigs.

Must die soon, Jazz is an incurable affliction.

A quote about Richard Pryor for information only - it's not new, just interesting:

Outspoken and hyperkinetic in his prime, Pryor, 63, has progressively been silenced by the onset of multiple sclerosis, first diagnosed nearly 20 years ago. He had already come close to death in 1980, when he suffered serious burns after setting himself on fire while “freebasing” cocaine.

His epic consumption of the drug since the Sixties is no trade secret (“I bought Peru,” he once confessed). Characteristically, he turned the accident into stand-up material. MS has proved a more unforgiving enemy.

There will, it seems, be no second act for Pryor. But there is a chance to become acquainted with his stream- of-consciousness, thanks to the belated reissue of his celebrated stand-up show, Richard Pryor: Live In Concert. Recorded in Long Beach, California, in 1979, the DVD captures him at his most irreverent and scatological, lampooning black and white sensibilities and, in one of the most memorable sections, recounting his experience of a near-fatal heart attack.

Live Fast, Die At 64?

DWB ;)
