morbidillo 1 Posted December 8, 2006 What does everyone think about the idea that the late performer Roy Castle contracted lung cancer through passive smoking? Did he really suck that much in through his trumpet, or was it something to do with tap dancing in working mens clubs in the 50s/60s/70s?
maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted December 10, 2006 Tap dancing, the clubs involved and Castle's trumpet playing all sucked big time! It wasn't a matter of whether he'd die, just when.
TLC 9 Posted December 10, 2006 It wasn't a matter of whether he'd die, just when. I'd go as far as to suggest that that's a rule applicable to all of us, not just Roy. All of us bar Clive Dunn anyway...
morbidillo 1 Posted December 12, 2006 It costs some people millions in cigarettes to get lung cancer, old Roy did,nt cough up a penny did he? Could he get into the guiness book of records as having smoked more of other peoples cigarettes without flashing his own? Could hundreds of jazz club-goers be entitled to some sort of compensation? Maybe he should have stuck to blowing and not sucking!

Guest Dick Powell Posted January 24, 2007 What does everyone think about the idea that the late performer Roy Castle contracted lung cancer through passive smoking? Did he really suck that much in through his trumpet, or was it something to do with tap dancing in working mens clubs in the 50s/60s/70s? One can't say for certain that it was passive smoking that caused Roy's cancer, but working in smoky venues for many years is recognised by specialists to be a major cause of this terrible disease. Just look at the proven constituents in cigarette smoke - scores of toxic chemicals, heavy metals and substances that are known to cause cancer in living organisms. There just is no doubt left that working in cigarette smoke is extremely dangerous - just look at the sheer numbers of people who die of smoking-rekated diseases. To his great credit, even though he attributed his cancer to cigarette smoke, Roy was never bitter or resentful of smokers and bore his illness with dignity. I met him, and apart from being the best tap dancer the UK has ever produced, he was a thoroughly good bloke.
