Dom Mintoff

Guest They_kill_me_if_i_tell_you

Please note that Dom Mintof was a communist dictator. He was a friend of all the scum listed in the exclusive 'Axis of Evil' list. Why don't we change the job description from prime minister of Malta to one of the following:

-Communist Pig of Malta

-Terrorist butt licker

-Mad Dictator

-Mini Saddam

Any other suggestions welcomed.

The only important question about this guy is ...

Is he likely to drop dead any time soon ??

Else I wish you'd take these political meanderings somewhere else.

Like Malta. Or at least the Irate Visitors Rage Hear post at the top of the page. :D

When taking your meanderings elsewhere, you might like to try his real name: Dom Mintoff.

Another completely random Bushism in a non-US President thread :(

Maybe we should just collect all these ramblings into their own thread and see if they attract the flies.

(Poo was from his coastal summer house. Swim took place in 1976). ;)

My recollection was that he let the Lybians in and spoiled a great British outpost!

Who ever said Mintoff was a communist leader has no inkling of what communism is. During Mintoff's years in power (1971 - 1985) the opposition press kept its venom - and was free to do so without closure or arrests. Free elections were held and any party could contest.

Mintoff was the greatest statesman Malta has ever had, and will ever have, for that matter.

Funny that come 2004 and he is still at it, with public meetings against Malta's integration with the European Empire. This is a genuine politician, not an opportunist sicko playing games.

Guest fuck me! Dom Mintoff here??

Look... this is really nice of you to put our erstwhile Prime Minister (aka 'The Saviour of Malta') on this prestigious list, but you are stirring the waters. Mintoff was a social 'revolutionary' but like all revolutionaries, gave too much power to thugs and bastards: and the whole Labour government from 1976 onwards (till 1987) was a whole feast of corruption, nepotism, favouritism.

Sure, there were important reforms: universal healthcare, social welfare, childrens' allowance, introductio of civil marriage, decriminalisation of homosexuality, nationalisation of important industries, Christ! and so much more...

But there was the violence, alas - so many of Mintoff's supporters wreaked havoc: on the Curia HQs, beating peopel protesting the government, and also some unsolved murders... the eighties: don't mention them.

Like most people, Mintoff had his good and bad points. I'm no fan of his, but he truly believed in his socialist principles with all his heart and never budged from them, even when it meant voting against the party he himself had founded, bringing down the Labour government. Even at the ripe old age of 86 he's still pretty active, campaigning against Malta's accession to the EU (another thing I disagree with him about). I guess many people had made the mistake of thinking that he was a has-been, just a figurehead or a mascot for the MLP to take out for a photo shoot on special occasions. Boy were they wrong.

His bad points are mainly concerned with his dictatorial style of leadership. He was obstinate, and since his PMship happened to coincide with the equally obstinate Archbishop Gonzi it was somewhat inevitable that they were to clash. Unfortunately he also turned a blind eye to, if not encouraged, the violent element that permeated his party - something that became even worse under his successor. Many also disagree with his friendliness with Libya, but frankly that's a matter of opinion. He was a socialist but not a communist. For all his dictatorial nature he still upheld the constitution, elections and so on.

At the same time he also did a great job with social security, free education & health care, etc., as well as making Malta a republic, establishing its non-aligned status etc. Oh, and we mustn't forget bringing down Alfred Sant's government
