Queen of 6,000 scorpions stung in face

A MALAYSIAN woman who is attempting to set a world record for living in a glass case packed with 6,000 scorpions has already been stung on the face and is suffering a fever after just five days.

Nur Malena Hassan, the "Scorpion Queen", is hoping to spend 36 days in a glass case measuring 12ft by 10ft at a shopping centre in Kuantan, 155 miles northeast of Kuala Lumpur.

Ms Hassan, 27, who set a world record by spending 30 days with 2,700 scorpions in 2001, is trying to win back the title from Kanchana Ketkaew, of Thailand, who spent 32 days with 3,400 scorpions in 2002. But already she is suffering a lack of sleep because of the scorpions crawling over her and she knows that she will pass out if stung more than three times in a short period. "Night-time is the worst," she said.

Despite five years of training, she said that she had only a 50 per cent chance of success. Thousands of Malaysians have gone to Kuantan to see Ms Hassan in the glass case, which she is allowed to leave for only 15 minutes each day. She watches DVDs to pass the time.

The Guinness Book of Records will be monitoring the attempt until its planned conclusion on September 25.
