The Trend Of Three In The Entertainment Business

Recommended Posts

For whatever reason, it is always a Hollywood tradition to have celebrities in the entertainment business die in threes... Usually weeks go by without having a celebrity die, then in the span of a week or two, three celebrities die in a row. Let's examine:

Christopher Bowman, Brad Renfro and Heath Ledger in January

Allan Melvin, Lois Nettleton, and Suzanne Pleshette in January also

Anthony Minghella, Arthur C. Clarke, and Paul Scofield (and Richard Widmark too) in March

Dick Martin, Sydney Pollack, and Harvey Korman in May

Charlton Heston and Roy Scheider both bucked the trend. Heston was the only real celebrity to die in April while Scheider was the only real celeb to die in February.

Celebrity deaths have slowed a bit since Heston's death so it was inevitable that things would pick up a bit...

And anyone can manipulate figures to suit their needs. Depends how far you extend the fame credentials.

Just far enough to have a threesome probably.

Putting brackets around a fourth obviously helps too :P ''Anthony Minghella, Arthur C. Clarke, and Paul Scofield (and Richard Widmark too) in March''

And of course, one could divide six into two threes too.

Elvis, Bing and Bolan.......that trio died the same year as Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane hit the swamp.

You can't argue with the evidence, or summat.

I think Widmark is the star of a different trio.

In March, Widmark himself died.

A day afterward, Abby Mann died, who directed Judgment at Nuremberg, a film where Widmark was one of the stars.

Several days later, Jules Dassin died, who directed, among other films, Night and the City, which featured Widmark.

Granted, the last two aren't as famous as the usual names listed, but still I suppose that could be allowed as it's a more specific trio.
