Results in full: Labour leadership contest

Sir Keir Starmer won the contest in the first round. Here are the full results:

Sir Keir Starmer – 275,780 (56.2%)

Rebecca Long-Bailey – 135,218 (27.6%)

Lisa Nandy – 79,597 (16.2%)

To give some context

Correct for first rounds

61.8% - Corbyn 2016 (2 candidates)

59.5% - Corbyn 2015 (4 candidates)

37.8% - D Miliband 2010 (beaten in final round by E.Miliband)

XX - Brown 2007 (Unoppposed)

57.0% - Blair 1994 (3 candidates)

Elections before 1994 were held under dubious electoral systems....

Smith - 91.0% (1992)

Kinnock 88.6% (1988)

Kinnock 71.3% (1983)

Elections before that were done on MP votes....

So Starmer got almost exactly the same share of votes in the 1st round as Tony Blair. Could he be as successful a leader? He has to be better than Corbyn. That's a given !

If he can do as well as Wilson at this point I think most Labour members would be happy.

So far today, our new LotO has appeared to be a very measured individual on Marr, pledged to assemble a cabinet that is diverse in the sense of both inclusivity and ideology, commented that his job for now is to scrutinise the government without expecting the absolutely impossible and has said that, post-Covid, austerity is not the answer to get us back on track.

So, Keir's Shadow Cabinet, some of whom will also be part of a shadow Covid-19 committee:

Angela Rayner: Deputy Leader (as elected) & Chair of the Labour Party (also C19)

Anneliese Dodds: Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer (also C19)

Lisa Nandy: Shadow Foreign Secretary (also C19)

Nick Thomas Symonds: Shadow Home Secretary (also C19)

Rachel Reeves: Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office & Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (also C19)

Jonathan Ashworth: Shadow Health Secretary (unchanged) (also C19)

Nick Brown: Chief Whip (unchanged)

Angela Smith, The Baroness Smith of Basildon: Shadow Leader of the House of Lords (unchanged)

Valerie Vaz: Shadow Leader of the House of Commons (unchanged)

Emily Thornberry: Shadow International Trade Secretary

Ed Miliband: Shadow Business Secretary

David Lammy: Shadow Justice Secretary

John Healey: Shadow Defence Secretary
