Spelling wasn't really fixed until there was near-universal literacy. People wrote things down as they heard them, or how they thought they should be spelt. People still do. Anyway, the Netherlands have had a civil registry since the early 1800s. That effectively froze the spelling of Dutch family names, but not completely. There's a branch of my own family that has a spelling variant introduced by a clerical error at the civil registry. My brother has a first name different from what my parents intended, due to a civil registrar´s bloody-mindedness. Surely you have a equivelant of the deed poll, so he could go by a common name (the one his parents intended) and adopt it officially as a teenager.

I DID fix the link in my O.P., but when I said I did, you clicked on the one in your response and it (apparently) doesn't update, so I could see that would be an overall problem, best to do a do-over. I'd prefer to delete and start anew and have '1' as my post count, but thanks to YOUR responding prior to my seeing the problem (which I was fixing when you posted), I couldn't just amend the O.P. and had to create a diatribe. So my intentions had/have nothing to do with a post count. However this additional response doesn't hurt. SC No I didn't, I refreshed this page myself and opened your OP in a separate window and clicked the link from that, it then opened this page for me when clicked. I did this about a minute after you posted to say you'd fixed the link. And regardless of my posting all you need to was edit the OP with the correct link and a by-line saying: "Cheers Deathray, link now fixed." Blaming me for the fact you're incompetent with computers and a post-whore is novel.
