Lee Holley, who created an idyllic picture of postwar American teenage life through “Ponytail,” a syndicated cartoon panel and Sunday comic strip that appeared in hundreds of newspapers around the world, died on March 26 in a plane crash in Marina, Calif. He was 85 (and flying a goddamn plane!). Mr. Holley, an (85 year old) amateur pilot, was flying his single-engine plane when it crashed at Marina’s municipal airport on the morning of the 26th. There were no passengers aboard. Marina is about 10 miles north of Monterey, Calif. SC

And for your Coincidental Deaths addendum: The man known as the "Voice of the Buffs," whose voice decades of University of Colorado sports fans recognized and celebrated, has died. C. F. Alan Cass died Wednesday at the age of 77. Cass was the public address announcer for CU men's basketball games starting in 1965 and CU football games starting in 1982. Remember all the 'Simons' dying a couple years ago? It's starting again! Kirk Simon, a documentary filmmaker who turned luminaries in the arts into teachers and brought cameras into the classroom, memorably in an Academy Award-winning film about a multinational school in Israel, died on April 14 in Manhattan. He was 63. Mr. Simon suffered cardiac arrest and was declared dead after he was taken to a hospital. SC

A national park in central Italy is investigating the death of a rare brown bear during an operation to capture it. Biologists at the park in the Apennine mountains had trapped the animal to fit him with a radio collar so they could track his movements. But the male Marsican bear began to struggle to breathe as he was being sedated and died shortly afterwards, despite efforts to revive him. Wildlife officials have described the loss of the animal as "very serious". "This is a subspecies in danger of extinction that now counts only 50 individuals or little more," said WWF Italia, as it called for a review of capture procedures. SC

FTR I had written her off early on as another in the long line of disappointing picks, but was searching something else nefarious and saw 'Nawaz' in the foreign headline. Huh....let's see what it says... I too was a bit stunned she was unique after the Big Reveal. Of course all that said she's alive and kicking today. SC

Are the White Helmets simply propoganda? "Despite there being no clear evidence that the Syrian president launched a chemical attack, anyone who questions the common narrative is described as an "Assad apologist." Still, some are speaking out against the echo chamber." SC

The House of Lords has voted for Britain to remain in the customs union with the EU after Brexit. The vote is an embarrassing defeat for Prime Minister Theresa May, who earlier this year was adamant that Britain’s exit from the EU would involve leaving both the customs union and the single market. Activists are now calling on her government to reopen the issue. Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer took to Twitter to hail the victory and called for a vote to be taken in the Commons now. SC
