Alphonse Mouzon, a drummer from Charleston who reached the pinnacle of the late-20th century jazz and soul scene, died on Christmas Day after a struggle with neuroendocrine cancer. He was 68. By the 1970s, he was performing with some of jazz music’s greatest artists: McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard and many others.
