That's a bit unfair on someone who genuinely was a close friend and nothing more! Assumptions can be dangerous - I once knew two elderly ladies who lived together, whom I assumed to be a lesbian couple. Turned out they were sisters. When I was growing up in the Seventies and Eighties there were a number of elderly spinsters who lived together but in many cases these were close friends who had lost fiances during the war and never entered into other relationships. I'll willingly give you any terminology to describe friendship of the hetero- deceased you can come up with besides 'companion'. You have a same sex 'companion', you're outed. Find me a single obit to the contrary and I shall change my opinion. SC

Mary R. Sawyer has died at 71. In 1986 she began a 25-year career teaching Religious Studies at Iowa State University in Ames, where she co-founded the African American Studies Program, created a Peace and Justice Internship option, and was a voice for the empowerment of women. True! Well, infamous in that a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer with no real treatment gives a life expectancy from less than a year to Wilko. If one gets the Whipple procedure they typically add about 2.5 years, less in many examples depending on age etc. Bottom line, doing a Death Pool has taught me the two words you do NOT want your physician to say to you are 'pancreatic cancer''. So the diagnosis is what a infamous I guess. SC

Could an Admin please merge this defunct and terribly superfluous thread with the Olympic Deaths /Dead Medallists thread that we currently use? Thanks. SC

Some unnamed Singapore native decides to smuggle drugs on a route that takes his vehicle through a checkpoint--a checkpoint put in place because of an international Security Summit. Oopsy. Something else bizarre in this report that I ferreted out: "The 34-year-old driver was killed and one passenger was wounded and hospitalized. BOTH passengers are now under arrest." (Emphasis added) Am I reading that correctly? Are Singaporeans so utterly goddamn stupid as to 'arrest' the deceased?!!! Can't find oldest Bull for some reason. However the oldest White Sox--Eddie Carnett--is 2nd oldest in all of baseball at 98.I'm guessing the great Bobby Hull may well be oldest Blackhawk though only 74. hockey players getting past 80 not terribly common. Maybe we need to hear more but that sounds far-fetched: a TREE? However, and more importantly: "Award-winning filmmaker Dan Edge has been investigating why the spread of Ebola was not curtailed sooner." How is THAT for a deep sleeper pick?! You play with fire you get burned. Dan Edge, guy who hangs around ebola patients. Better odds than some dude who happens to be 92 but healthy as a horse, IMHO. SC

I guess this is where we plop a graphic designer. Jerry Dior, whose design of a hitter awaiting a pitch is the universally recognized symbol of Major League Baseball, as well as one of the most visible and influential graphic images of our time, died May 10 at his home in Edison, N.J. He was 82. The cause was colon cancer. Well that's fair, it took MLB 40 years to recognize Dior as the designer of their logo, so it took Dior's wife 3 weeks to announce he died. Perry moved to hospice care to await the inevitable. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-3102797/Top-ranking-Mormon-leader-heads-hospice-cancer-worsens.html Didn't have to wait too long. Phew, Sir C doesn't have to convert! (Unless he wants to, I'm pro-choice here). The brothers who founded the Mormon religion both died on my birthday, and I has some odd fascination with Brigham Young Univ as a teenager (so much so my mother bought me a t-shirt for the Cougars -- a name I gave my dog cuz of BYU). So I'm damn near a Mormon anyway, and would be but for the non-drinking and no holiday things. Sorry to hear they're down to a Quorum of Eleven. SirC (still Catholic by birth).

Constituencies with new MPs, ie the member of parliament elected in 2015 hasn't been an MP before? St Helens South and Whiston is the constituency I grew up in, though it was just St Helens South then. It's very, very Labour. You could probably put a red rosette on Jimmy Savile's corpse and he'd still be elected. They all definitely have new MPs, whether all first timers I cannot say; my answer has a little more DL twist to it.

To be fair, we sit here and have a good chuckle at the expense of the Brown/Houston saga, and much of it they brought upon themselves and deserve. But I hope I'm never in the position Bobby Brown finds himself re: Bobbi Kristina, cuz frankly I may feel say and do exactly what he has so far. It's an altogether sad story that has a final page he doesn't want to turn to; and as a father to a daughter of my own, I don't blame him. SC
