honestly, I wish her a few more birthdays, I would be really sad to see her go this year, she is such an icon, a classy woman, one of the greatest actress of her generation. I found her phone number on the french phone book but I never had the guts to call : I feel like this is something I'm gonna regret one day…

We are at the halfway point of the year tonight. The best ever tally before now was 9 in 2008. I believe that 2020 will forever more be known as the year of death , at least partly because of corona of course. Vera Lynn,,Kirk Douglas...some of the most iconic names in history gone! And we still have 6 months to go. I am now 100 % confident that we will break all previous records , and then some! 20 is a modest forecast for the years end tally !
I now believe that we we will see the demise of Prince Philip, Bob Dole, Olivia de Haviland,Leslie Philips and many other famous names before the year is out. Make the most of this time, because we might never see the like of it again !
I agree with you on the fact that it can be a recordbreaking year but it’s not because we had 11 deaths in 6 months that we won’t have a dry period. I personally prefer to be more pessimistic and end up being happily surprised than the contrary

My decision was between
yes: I like to see them on the DL, famous enough, classy, near death, glamorous
and
no: not famous enough, just a random UK-centric-boring pick, too healthy, too ugly
That's how lists should be compiled
Love the beauty criteria, seems like an important one for me !

I don't know how to edit the topic but I've just figured I forgot an -s at the end of "academician" on the title
-
Following the passing of Marc Fumaroli yesterday, I thought it was a good idea to start a new topic concerning the 40 French/frail academicians.
To be honest, I was quite hesitant to make it as a game just like the oldest state leaders alive where everyone can choose a candidate between the remaining one, but maybe a simple topic about is enough ? Let me know if a game sounds interesting for you !
Anyway, I doubt those people are barely even famous outside of France (except for a few one) and, even here, there's some names which remains quite unknown !
Here are the 33 remaining academician alive after Fumaroli's death :
- René de Obaldia (seat n°22) : 1918
- Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (seat n°16) : 1926
- Jean Denis Bredin (seat n°3) : 1929
- Hélène Carrère d'Encausse (seat n°14) : 1929
- Dominique Fernandez (seat n°25) : 1929
- François Cheng (seat n°34) : 1929
- Gabriel de Broglie (seat n°11) : 1931
- Pierre Nora (seat n°27) : 1931
- Pierre Rosenberg (seat n°23) : 1936
- Michael Edwards (seat n°31) : 1938
- Claude Dagens (seat n°1) : 1940
- Angelo Rinaldi (seat n°20) : 1940
- Jean Clair (seat n°39) : 1940
- Daniel Sallenave (seat n°30) : 1940
- Florence Delay (seat n°10) : 1941
- Jules Hoffman (seat n°7) : 1941
- Jean Marie Rouart (seat n°26) : 1943
- Frédéric Vitoux (seat n°15) : 1944
- Michel Zink (seat n°37) : 1945
- Jean-Luc Marion (seat n°4) : 1946
- Eric Orsenna (seat n°17) : 1947
- Patrick Grainville (seat n°9) : 1947
- Xavier Darcos (seat n°40) : 1947
- Barbara Cassin (seat n°36) : 1947
- Daniel Rondeau (seat n°8) : 1948
- Amin Maalouf (seat n°29) : 1949
- Alain Finkielkraut (seat n°21) : 1949
- Jean Christophe Ruffin (seat n°28) : 1952
- Danny Lafferière (seat n°2) : 1953
- Dominique Bona (seat n°33) : 1953
- Maurizio Serra (seat n°13) : 1954
- Marc Lambron (seat n°38) : 1957
- Andreï Makine (seat n°5) : 1957
There is actually 7 seats empty :
- N°6 : following the death of Marc Fumaroli the 24th of June of 2020
- N°12 : following the death of Jean d'Ormesson the 5th of December of 2017
- N°18 : following the death of Michelle Serres the 1st of June of 2019
- N°19 : following the death of Jean-Loup Dabadie the 24th of May of 2020
- N°24 : following the death of Max Gallo the 18th of July of 2017
- N°32 : following the death of François Weyergens the 27th of May of 2019
- N°35 : following the death of Yves Pouliquen the 4th of February of 2020
Noted that there is actually 3 deaths of French academicians this year, the deadlier year for academicians is 2007 with 7 deaths. Plus the deaths of Dabadie and Fumaroli are exactly one month appart : could we expect another death on the 24th of July now ?
So, now, who will be the next one to die ? Who will be the next one to join this frail assembly ?

French author and academician Marc Fumaroli has died at 88 https://www.lemonde.fr/disparitions/article/2020/06/24/l-historien-de-la-litterature-marc-fumaroli-est-mort_6044035_3382.html
a personnal miss. There’s a lot of frail academician in France but I didn’t think he was the next to go after Dabadie’s death last month... somehow Rene de Obaldia is still here at 101
