  2. With Stafford's death, all Apollo 10 crew members have passed away

    - It's the 3rd Apollo mission to die out, after Apollo 14 and 12 (quite a bad streak for the even numbered missions).

There are only 7 out 24 Apollo astronauts left: Aldrin, Scott, Duke, Schmitt (succesful missions 11, 15, 16, 17); as well as Lovell, Anders and Haise - Apollo 8 and/or 13).

Of those who have their grandparents alive or dead, do you still have some great-uncle or great-aunt alive as me ?

All of my greatgrandparents had between seven and eleven children, most of them married. Which resulted in my parents having over sixty aunts and uncles combined.

There are still 15 left on my father's side, aged 79-95. I'm not completely sure but there are about 18 left on my mother's side, aged ~73-90 - and my grandmother who'll hopefully celebrate her 92nd birthday in a few weeks time.

Besides my grandmother, I've not met many of the ones alive outside of funerals but especially the ones on my dad's side seem like a fun lot!

    Good luck, @ThereWillBeDeaths7

I'll be honest, I completely forgot about the Cup until I got a message about it yesterday and went "oh shit". So my team is as last minute useless as possible.

Thanks @msc and good luck to you as well!

Even your late minute team seems quite dangerous to me. Cowell, Starmer Smith, Manolic are just some of the lingerers that could suddenly pass away. I do think there were more "obvious" candidates for last month than right now. Anyway, hoping I picked the right ailing astronaut for this round.

Well I am officially shacking therewillbedeaths7's hand, saying well done and wish you luck in the next round I believe with msc is I am not mistaken

I'm fine with you shaking my hand; shacking it however is where I draw the line ;)

Thanks and well played @livingbygrace; it's often a case of luck (as well as bad luck for the people on our lists) that determines the game as opposed to some higher knowledge of the imminent demise of famous people!

Ok therewillbedeaths7 now you are just showing off with your hit of wilson Fittipaldi.  Can you not have a bit of mercy towards a newbie without crushing ones spirit and soul?  With all seriousness though well done and I wish you luck in your next round.

Thank you @livingbygrace, although I have to asure you it's not over yet! Wilson Fittipaldi wasn't a sure hit at the end of last month in my mind, and there's always the possibility of some unexpected deaths on your team :)

  8. A follow-up post about Dries van Agt's passing:

    - Van Agt served as a member of parliament for KVP and later CDA, being the first ever political leader of the CDA. He became Minister of Justice in 1971, serving until 1977. During his time as a minister, a train was hijacked near the village of De Punt by 9 Moluccan nationalists, starting a hostage crisis which lasted for 20 days. In trying to end the crisis, intervention by counter-terrorist special forces possibly contributed to the deaths of two hostages, in addition to 6 of the hijackers.

    - Van Agt was Deputy Prime Minister from 1973-1977 under Joop den Uyl (1919-1987), thereafter leading three cabinets Van Agt between 1977-1982. During his tenure as PM, Queen Juliana abdicated and Queen Beatrix' coronation took place under tumultuous circumstances: there were riots in Amsterdam because of a housing shortage.

    - After his career in national politics, he served as Queen's Commissioner of North Brabant between 1983-1987, ending his political career as an EU ambassador 1987-1995.

The oldest and earliest serving Dutch Prime Minister is now Jan-Peter Balkenende (b. 1956), serving from 2002-2010. The only other living Dutch PM is the current one, Mark Rutte (b. 1967).

After Van Agt's death, there are no living ministers from the cabinets Biesheuvel I and II (1971-1973).

According to the AD he and his wife decided on euthenasia.

This was news to me, I hadn't realized Eugenie had also passed away. After reading the article, it seems to me that they had quite a "nice" death. Both of them had been in ailing health, and they held hands as they both passed away. Also spared them of having to miss one another after 65 years of marriage.

Although he had been ailing for years, hearing the news on the radio still surprised me. What's more: he passed away last monday (Feb 6), a few days after his 93rd birthday and had already been buried before his death was announced.

  11. As this seems to be happening for real now: Lewis Hamilton to drive for Ferrari in 2025!

In some way it was bound to happen eventually but as he's been with Mercedes for 12 years after this year and will become 40 years old before the start of the 2025 season, I didn't really see it happening anymore. He'll be older than Kimi was when he left Ferrari, and he seemed to be there largely for the memes in his last years in F1.

A couple of grands prix wins in the next few years now seems inevitable for Hamilton, but will he get his 8th world title? I can't really see Ferrari stepping up their game to that level yet, but I guess we'll see!

  12. Dutch footballer Bennie Muller has passed away aged 85.

He played 426 games as a midfielder for Ajax between 1958-1970, becoming national champion five times with Johan Cruyff and coach Rinus Michels.

He also was part of the Dutch National Team from 1960-1968, just before their succesful years and perhaps most importantly, part of my Dutch shadowlist in 2023.

My father in law has died. He turned 85 a few months ago and died this morning suddenly. He did not suffer.

My condolences. 85 is a good/high age but when a loved one passes away it's always a sad occassion for family members and others close. All the best.

  14. This is already the most popular of the Residual games, with 13 players at the moment. Great to see many people playing for the first, second, third as well as fourth time. The large amount of players may however mean it'll take some years before we have a winner.

20/20 Residual: 2/9 selections still alive

    20/20 +1 Residual: 4/7

    20/20 +2 Residual: 7/11

    20/20 +3 Residual: 13/13 (entry still possible)

Additionally, all Residual games have unpicked candidates who are still alive - they are not listed above.
