On the topic of those I was aware of (which is admittedly a shorter timeframe) the most notable are Juan Antonio Samaranch and Charles Colson. And speaking of Colson, I was born just one day before Richard Nixon died. My parents kept the newspaper from my date of birth I believe and it had a headline among the lines of "Nixon very sick".

For what it's worth, his father and Missoni's founder Ottavio is still around and turns 92 next month.

His veep says Hugo can be sworn in at a later date. Still reckon that it's a moot point...

I dropped Bernie Nolan, but she's my first alt so odds are she'll get back on after David James's death. Some others I considered but dropped were Gough Whitlam (too old), Ryan Buell (seemed well enough), Felix Dennis (not in best shape but is recovering from what I checked) and Anne Williams. (a cert to die, but there are enough ailing people I'm more comfortable with picking) -
Even if he's out of the hospital, he's still a 93 year old with heart problems.

Oh hell At the very least, are alts considered acceptable for people who die before the New Year but are known within the first few days?

Really surprised he's still around, I'd have expected him to pull a Callaghan. Feels like one of the dead certs to die among this list to me.
-
I think his odds of lasting through the year are good but at least he can bring some interesting convo to the table.

Solid list IMO, lots of good choices. Good seeing Havelange, Reagan, Dole, et al back as well as some quality choices for newcomers. Love the description for Prince Philip. Probably the one issue I have is that Mugabe was dropped (I'd have dropped Harper Lee instead personally) but otherwise there's no complaints on my end.

Cheers to you as well.

Faithless elector Barbara Lett-Simmons, gained a flicker of notoriety following the US 2000 election for refusing to cast a ballot for Al Gore in spite of being pledged to him
