60s, to the shock of no one -
Belafonte is one of the saddest deaths for me so far this year, while Bryant Donham is one of the happiest. Yin and yang innit.

Sad loss but a grand age. RIP.

A deep QO falls over April Stevens: https://uk.news.yahoo.com/music-world-mourns-loss-falls-112000281.html

I rather like the backstory that they recorded it at the last minute, and Stevens had to do the spoken word monologue to get Tempo to remember the lyrics. Hard to envision that happening on a big hit in today's polished times!

Also one for the DDP LotM as GUN entered that same Deathrace team as a theme team. -

If they were rich men... Three Topol pickers to fiddle with the scoreboard. Charles De Gaulle is left feeling like a yutz with a paltry 14 points (10 base + 4 bonus) while markb4 gets 25 points with his first sub and Etushispushingupdaisies gets 50 with his second. Another sub hit comes with killer Hollywood star Robert Blake ending in cold blood. Only Gooseberry Crumble selected him to the tune of 25 points. La cine mexicana star Ignacio Lopez Tarso is another midtable unique for Torva Messor. His curtain call delivers her 28 points (20 base + 8 bonus). On the same day as Tarso, YoungWillz cleaned up with Bill Tidy. His debut hit of the year will clog up the scoreboard with a total of 66 points (30 base + 36 bonus). What seemed poised to be a sluggish month did end with a bang. Merry Christmas came early for nine teams with the death of electronic composing wiz Ryuichi Sakamoto: Perhaps and wannamaker gain 35 points. Toast 30. CaptainChorizo 25. Sean 20. DeathBecomesThem and Etushispushingupdaisies 15. and gcreptile and msc land a first sub for 25 points. Sakamoto proves most pivotal to the latest scoreboard, with his death giving us a new Captain by a very slender 1.05-point magin: 1. CaptainChorizo 147 2. gcreptile 145.95 3. Banana 140 4. justonecornetto 139.95 5. DeathBecomesThem 125.77 6. msc 111.77 7. drol 105.77 8. wannamaker 100.95 9. RadGuy 92.7 10. Etushispushingupdaisies 91.4 11. Perhaps 85.95 12. March update coming soon. Looks like it'll be Robert Blake, Topol, Ignacio Lopez Tarso, Bill Tidy, and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

The Jimmy/Rolf bandwagons were no match for Sakamoto. Well done to his eight pickers. Thread closed.
-
The difference one death can make. I was remarking in the past hour how the Player of the Month for March was a very unremarkable 12 points. Since Sakamoto was in March, it's instead 29 points for Waiting for the Hearse (Sakamoto joker + a unique nonagenarian)!

I do find it kind of funny how Shivakumara Swami exaggerated his age to a similar degree, but because he kept being hospitalized he became a forum legend while Fauja Singh is reviled since all he did is run with no real health issues.

It's been very underwhelming on the front page too on a personal level. Interesting people are still dying, but compared to last year they are disproportionately misses (Huey "Piano" Smith, Bert I. Gordon, all these Gooseberry drops). Makes me extra glad for my decision to pick Napoleon XIV.
-
Still waiting for a Napoleon XIV DDP QO, but the NYT covers him for here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/17/arts/music/jerry-samuels-dead.html

Ultimately can chalk this as another lament for Gooseberry. Gerry O'Hara now has a Telegraph obit. -
Caldwell was a top 5 survivor last year, Diana Rots-ing really isn't what it used to be.
