The stats for 2022 England & Wales baby names are out. (Note not 2023) The BBC are making a big deal out of Charles dropping out of the top 100. They are missing a very obvious factor: the fad for nicknames or informal versions of names. Charles is at 102 with 533 boys named Charles. But Charlie is at 16 with 2,391. Surely a point worth making, but nobody thought to mention it. Note: if you download the datasets, you'll find the complete lists on Table 6.

I don't see anything like that in my feed. It's like everywhere, the more you click on something, the more similar stuff you're shown. I get a lot of posts featuring art, architecture, photography, ancient landscapes, stone circles, animal behaviour, loads of things. And funny stuff like Fesshole. If you follow the right sort of posters it's fine.

What hasn't helped is the prohibition on renting out houses that fall below EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) Band E. This disqualifies a lot of older properties (including my own house). And it is or was proposed to raise the minimum to Band C! There's a big story on the BBC news page today about the shortage of rental properties, yet this massive factor doesn't get a mention.
