    Band Aid

So tired of the sniping at the original Band Aid, mostly coming from people who were not around at the time. This guy was, though, and he seems to have completely missed the point. "To say: 'Do they know it’s Christmas?’ is funny, it is insulting," says Dawit Giorgis, who in 1984 was the Ethiopian official responsible for getting the message out about what was happening in his country. His incredulity decades on is obvious in his voice and he remembers how he and his colleagues responded to the song. "It was so untrue and so distorted. Ethiopia was a Christian country before England… we knew Christmas before your ancestors," he tells the BBC. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9dl22gz3vlo FFS! It wasn't about whether they were Christians. It was saying that the people were in such dire straits, starving and dying, that they probably wouldn't be aware of it being Christmas (or any other celebration). They had more important things to deal with. .... the chorus of disapproval about the track, its stereotypical representation of an entire continent - describing it as a place "where nothing ever grows; no rain nor rivers flow" - and the way that recipients of the aid have been viewed as emaciated, helpless figures, has become louder over time. It was also specifically about Ethiopia, where the famine was, and not Africa in general. And "emaciated, helpless figures" was what we were seeing on the news. Yes, it says "there won't be snow in Africa" but that's because "Ethiopia" doesn't scan. It's called poetic licence.

    Death In The Family

So sorry that you, your mother and your family have had to endure this. Among other emotions you must be feeling relieved, and that is OK.

  10. I don't think this was ever resolved I seem to remember some speculation that chimney might be a slang term for a black eye, but that may have been a wild guess.

If you can extrapolate her mother's maiden name from the parents' marriage and add it to the search, that might confirm. Looks like this is her though. GRO doesn't give mmn for births in the last 100 years, but if you know it and enter it in the search, it shows up in the result. Maybe SP works the same way?

Was she born in Scotland though? If so, it won't be on FreeBMD or GRO as they only cover England and Wales. Anybody got Scotland's People? Not sure what range of BMDs they have.

Dennis Bryon apparently dead too. Two Bee Gees drummers die within days of one another "The band’s original drummer, Colin Petersen, died four days before Dennis Bryon, who played throughout their imperial Saturday Night Fever phase"

Exactly. But people are now being influenced and encouraged to regard it as rape. No, it isn't and I'm pleased that you agree with me. The Pelicot case is egregious. That's not what I said. Anyway I am not going to discuss this any further. I won't be moved from my opinion that there are degrees of severity, just as there are in cases of causing bodily harm or death.

    Mette-Marit, Crown Princess of Norway

I disagree entirely. There is an enormous gulf between being violently attacked and raped by some hideous stinking stranger who jumps out of a dark alley, and your partner making love to you when you didn't really feel like it because you were too tired or had a headache or whatever. Yet we are now conditioned to regard these as equal. It is nonsense.

a preliminary charge of having "sexual intercourse with someone who is unconscious or for other reasons unable to resist the act"....... ......The charge was brought by the police, not the woman who was allegedly raped, according to her lawyer ...... ...... Details are unclear but police said there was "a relationship between the suspect and the victim". Sounds like a domestic rather than violent stranger rape. (Yes, I consider there is a huge difference.) Shagged the girlfriend while she was asleep or drunk?
  25. Re the inheritance tax on farms. I imagine what the government is trying to do is catch the billionaires who have bought up farmland as a tax-avoiding measure. But setting the bar at £1m is way too low. Similar mistake they made with the winter fuel payment - too many of the less well-off caught in the net.
