One of those picks I didn't give a second thought to because I assumed there was no chance they'd obit, but Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, chief minister of Kashmir, died at 79 and got the required write-up in the Daily Mail.
-
Hoping for my usual strong start, no deaths at all between Valentine's Day and St Andrews and then another late run to finish things off.
-
Another 360 points for Pat Harrington Jr for those who had him.
-
Family confirmation here. Presume the Mail will roll out an obit about 20 minutes after TMZ does.

Christ, he's been gone well over a decade now. I think he managed to get a council house and then died of a heart attack a few years later, iirc he was a big fan of the occasional beer/can of brasso strained through a piece of bread.
-
Well that's not playing the game, he was diagnosed back in November but they only waited until now to break the news. You're speaking to a guy who has a Northamptonians theme team in the DDP this year, what a prick he is to delay this announcement. He's got nothing on the guy who used to have the Postman Pat puppet back when I was a nipper in the town centre, though.

Latest interview with Deadly Doug from a day or so back, hilarious to see Villa fans go "he was the greatest owner we ever had, what a great football man" considering he was about as popular in Birmingham as someone going "this shopping centre is a really dumb shape" for about 15 years.

I got to meet Sir Douglas Bader when I was about 7 or 8. It was at a charity fete at Queen Mary's hospital in Roehampton, London. He was very arrogant, and barely spoke to anyone. He didn't have a leg to stand on.

I was kinda.... not upset, but dispirited by Living End's comments about people not caring about Jenny Diski other than for her points. Like I said, a good deadpooler is someone who, like a good obituarist, is interested in people. We learn about people through their illness, but they're still people and it certainly helps the trivia section of our brain playing this great sport of ours.
-
I think we've definitely turned some sort of corner from Brave Inspirational Cancer Sufferers (your Steven Suttons, Lauren Hills, etc) through to people who are.... I kinda wanna call them "warm corpses" really, the likes of Grace Sung Eun Lee, Marlissa Munoz, DDT's guy who died the other day and now Hassan Asif. People whose narrative isn't "I am fighting inspiringly against the disease that is killing me and am gaining a media profile to encourage awareness among others", but they are just people who didn't seek fame who are dead or as close to as possible. It is an arms race though, nobody really wants to pick these folk.... part of the fun of deadpooling is that you learn about less-famous figures as part of your research. Mother Angelica's firebrand nun sermons, Thomas Fekete being part of an indie band who have the same strife illness and reprehensible rating as The Temptations managed, Luke Halpin having a weird following of people online who I can't tell if they are nostalgic for 1960s tv shows or if they're just nonces who like pictures of a shirtless 13-year-old, even if he is 70 and in a wheelchair now. Hassan Asif doesn't provide that. Neither does Taylor Swift's mother, Vanessa Hudgens' dad, your man from Geordie Shore's grandfather, Zayn Malik's nan, etc. But yeah, it's an arms race because if one person makes that pick, everyone else has to. One possible solution that probably needs working on is, not the Wikipedia route (which would penalise people in certain fields and benefit those in others, do we really want every fucking webcomic artist ever to be a valid obit?), but maybe the celeb pick in question has to have been MENTIONED in a qualifying obit source for reasons other than illness prior to them being picked. So for this, say, Rowena Kincaid would count, Kris Travis would count, probably even Kate Granger as well, but your Lauren Hills and the like would get bupkiss. John Underwood was nearly picked by me, I make him 50/50 to go this year. If he holds on for 2k17 he'll definitely be a draft pick for me, if he qualifies under new rules....

There's a smaller "Cher dying" on the cover of this week's issue, with the main story being the discovery of Elvis's lovechildren

So my rebel team has.... 364 + 360 = 724 points

But the news would still not be in the UK section.
-
I think you've massively misunderstood how newspapers work. By your logic, if Barack Obama was assassinated he wouldn't qualify for an obituary because his death wouldn't be covered in the "UK" section of any newspapers, and a US-based reporter would file copy on it. It counts. The four-peat is on.

Our girl taking shots at a woman I'm sure is Dr Zorders' favourite current writer, Laurie Penny: Laurie Penny @PennyRed 2h2 hours ago I love it when racists tell me what my feminism should look like. It's literally my favourite thing, second only to this chest flu I have. More Jenny Diski @diski 2h2 hours ago @PennyRed You think you'e got flu. I've got a line to my heart to fed 3 times a day by nurse. which is worse? Weak as kit drowned yesterday

I know she's not "technically" big enough for her own thread on here, but she is a guaranteed "as soon as she dies" obit in both The Guardian and The Times, and her Twitter feed is a classic for those of us who like to keep tabs on our quarry in real time. She's just tweeted again after a week away, looks like she's good to go for 2k16: enny Diski @diski 1h1 hour ago I'm crying & not just about looks and alienation. I can't follow the world outside. Pat Harrington's daughter did a "my father is slipping away...." Facebook post before Xmas and it was promptly seized upon by America's proud and honourable supermarket checkout tabloid media.

Playing both sides is a very high-risk strategy to be undertaken solely by great political minds and movers. Simon Danczuk is not a great political mind. I wouldn't trust him to run the office Eurovision sweepstakes.

President Hollande felt the need to issue a statement in mourning at Delpech's death, confident he'll get either a Times or Guardian obit by the week's end.

I submitted my team to Maryport seven minutes late so, as amends, I will be competing as a shadow team and if I beat the official winner to the punch, I'll donate £10 cash to charity myself. My team is the same as my DDP entry just with Mother Angelica as the joker. 364 points for Michel Delpech
