    Deep Purple

Rod Edwards, original lead singer of Deep Purple, seems to have vanished completely. Rumours abound that he's either working as a paramedic in Essex, or singing under an assumed name in California.

    Hooroo, Mate.

Australian glam rocker William Shakespeare has died of a heart attack aged 61. His career never really got going again after he was convicted of underage sex in 1975. He went on to suffer mental health and alcoholism problems before ending up homeless. Hyperion to a Satyr. Or summat.

    Norman Wisdom

I was just watching some Albanian live TV news (as you do) on the web and the news of Norman's sad demise doesn't appear to have reached them yet. The whole country will go in to mourning when they find out. Perhaps I should send them an email.

    Ideas And Possibilities For 2011

I was sure that there is a Coronation Street thread somewhere, but I can't find it. Anyway, Bill Tarmey, who apparently plays a character called Jack Duckworth, is quitting the show after thirty years due to health problems described as "extreme breathing difficulties".

    Fort William Football Club

Fort William did play the replay yesterday and they lost 2-3 . I'm sure this is only a temporary blip and they will be back to match winning ways before too long.

    The Dead Of 2010

I wasn't sure where to post this, but there's an fascinating contemporary account of death by rabies in the latest issue of the "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report" (the link opens up a PDF document and you need to scroll down to page eight). One of the symptoms of the early stages of the unfortunate victim's illness was that he

    Kim Jong-Il

Thanks for the tip MPFC! I've just finished Nothing To Envy and would concur it's a brilliant piece of work. It was a bit like post-apocalyptic fiction without the apocalypse...or the fiction for that matter ....anyway, it was gripping stuff. There were some especially vivid descriptions of the effects of food deprivation and starvation, I felt hungry the whole way through.

    Wrestlers/actors

Shame about Giant Gonzales, he was discussed as a possibility earlier on this thread. People with acromegaly tend not to live a very long time. I personally think that Richard Kiel, now aged 71, might be a good outside bet for the DL one day.

    Curse Of The Eurovision

Belgian singer Fud Leclerc, who represented his country four times at the Eurovision Song Contest, has left us for the sweet hereafter at the age of 86. He achieved little success in his singing endeavours, culminating in a "nil points" effort in 1962, whereupon he took radical steps:

I don't think there's too much to worry about. To be successful, the Republicans always need to get votes from the centre gound of US politics and they won't get many with this mob calling the shots.
