The baseball player Leonard Koenecke died on this day in 1935, aged 31. He was beaten to death with a fire extinguisher by a flight attendant after going beserk and attacking the pilot of a small plane he had chartered. -
I thought this thread would be as good as any to post about a death by banjo. The offender got twelve years in jail. Quite right too, people who show such a moronic lack of respect to fine musical instruments deserve to be dealt with harshly.

Ian Brady hits out over release of Lockerbie bomber.

I know it doesn't matter anymore, but Bobby Graham now has a "proper" BBC obit. I was a bit worried that Bobby would be my first ever deadpool hit not to get me any points. (Although I have cut it a bit fine before with Baba Amte, Yahweh Ben Yahweh and Bartholomew Ulufa'alu)

The Kinks.... How about Golden Earring? They were formed in 1961 and the last time they changed their line up was in 1970. Or, for serious rock fans, The Beverly Sisters released their first record in 1951 and they're still going with the original line up. The original 1968/9 incarnation of Mott the Hoople (Hunter, Watts, Buffin, Ralphs and Allen) has reformed for a residency at the Hammersmith Apollo later this year. Looks like we forgot about Peter, Paul and Mary - they were together for nearly 50 years.

Pill popping septuagenarian Burt Reynolds is taking some time out from the hustle and bustle of presciption painkiller addiction.

Irish folk legend Liam Clancy, 74, the last surviving member of The Clancy Brothers, isn't doing too well at the moment. He was too ill to attend a civic reception held in his honour last week and doesn't look at all well in .

He (I think) was on The One Show (I think) some time this week, I remember flicking on the TV and caught the very very end of the piece. They were in Exeter cathedral and I'm afraid that's about all I can say. For those more curious try looking it up on iplayer, it was definitely BBC1 as barring CNN it's the only English channel I can get. It was a feature on Raphael Ravenscroft, the saxophonist on Baker Street, there was no mention of our missing hero's whereabouts. Ok, I'm sorry for not paying attention keep up the good work. He's got this dream about buying some land. He's going to give up the booze and the one night stands. And then he'll settle down, in a quiet little town and forget about everything.

Musician Norton Buffalo, a member of the Steve Miller Band since 1975, is suffering from pneumonia and stage four lung cancer, which has spread to his brain. Comedy sketch writer Mike Craig, best known for his work with Morecambe and Wise, is suffering from Pick's Disease, a form of dementia.

I went for Susan Atkins. Any day now, she shall be released.

Marvellous succinct comment. I've never won any competitions, I doubt this will be any different. Not with half the population of Tonga still baying for your blood.

I picked Bobby Graham on the CPDP - I do hope he gets a mention on either the BBC or The Independent, otherwise I won't get any points.

Dreadful news. Natty Brooker, former drummer with seminal 80s druggy psychadelic band Spaceman 3 is suffering from terminal cancer. Also an artist, he designed the album sleeve for Spiritualized's Laser Guided Melodies.

The Mail on Sunday have been granted a rare interview with Mick Taylor, Rolling Stones guitarist from 1969-1974. He's not quite down and out, but he isn't exactly flourishing either. Moss Grows Fat On A...

Irish TV scriptwriter and producer Frank Deasy, 49, is suffering from liver cancer. In his words: Definitely famous enough and certainly ill enough. He won an Emmy award for "Prime Suspect" and wrote the superb but underrated "Looking After Jo Jo", which starred Robert Carlisle. IMDB page.

The hoax, which didn't originate on DL, has made the papers. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemon...y-gelbarts.html It's a shame that the story was revealed to be hoax, because Larry Gelbart has just died.

Patriarch Pavle of Serbia is celebrates his 95th birthday today. Here's a recent photo of him. It's amazing that he's still alive, I don't think he's got out of bed since 2006 and he very nearly died in 2007. I can't imagine that His Holiness will maintain his steely grip on life for too much longer.

Nikita Khrushchev died on this day in 1971, followed by Salvador Allende exactly two years later. Sept 11th isn't really a good day for capitalists or communists. -
Make that currently battling terminal liver cancer. But will he get a UK obit?
