So very sad. I've been watching the story quite closely over the weekend and I really admired the strength and dignity of Eluana Englaro's father, Beppino Englaro. He had fought court battles for over a decade to end her life humanely and right at the very last he had to endure Silvio Burlusconi's attempts to prolong his daughter's suffering. While maintaining a very dignified press silence, he also had to cope with the care of his wife, who is currently dying of cancer. I've never been much of a fan of Silvio Burlusconi, but his attempts to override the Italian consitution this weekend and turn his country from a democracy in to some sort of theocracy at the beck and call of The Vatican have made for pretty grim reading. Luckily, the temperamental nature of Italian politics means he won't be around too long before someone else takes over at the top.

I hear "Beds are Burning" is back in the Aussie charts. *gets coat* Talk about pouring Midnight Oil on troubled waters.

American jazz singer Blossom Dearie, has died at the age of 82.

Actor James Whitmore has died aged 87. According to his Wikipedia page "he was the last remaining nominee in the Best Supporting Actor category from the 1940s (upon the passing of Richard Widmark)."

Eluana Englaro might not be snuffing it at all now - Italy's government has issued an emergency decree preventing the removal of her feeding tubes, right at the eleventh hour. I thought the points were in the bag. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7875528.stm

Ken Hutcherson, former NFL linebacker and outspoken anti gay pastor, has been suffering from prostate cancer for the last six years. In an email to followers, he has asked them to pray for him and told them he is about to start chemotherapy. Prostate cancer isn't usually treated with chemotherapy unless the condition is very advanced, or if it has spread to the bones.

Buffalo Springfield drummer Dewey Martin has died aged 68. He sang backing vocals on their biggest hit “For What It’s Worth” – in addition to providing the LSD that he claimed inspired Stephen Stills to write the song.

That's odd, I looked up centricism in the dictionary and it wasn't there? Neither was fuggin for that matter. I can't see any violence directed towards you in any of the above posts, only insults. There is a 'report' feature if you're really upset about something. Instead of trying to teach us, maybe you could educate yourself, starting with the search facility on this forum (it's that little white box on the bottom left of the screen with "search" helpfully written next to it.) You do make yourself look rather silly everytime you start a new thread on a non-entity or on someone who has been discussed at length before (Bobby Robson and Tammy Faye spring to mind). Have a look at the unwritten rules if you're in any doubt. And you've got no excuse for starting a Reg Gutteridge is dead thread, seeing as it was you who started the other thread in his honour, look - here it is. One more thing, referring to everyone here as students is a bit of a sweeping generalisation, completely inaccurate and is unlikely to endear you to anyone. Do feel free to keep on posting though, we need someone to laugh at now Banshees is receiving treatment. Here to help.

Death Anniversary Thread

Joe Meek, legendary record producer, blew his brains out forty two years ago today. He killed his landlady before turning the gun on himself. From Wiki: -
Former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is in a stable condition in hospital. He has suffered from health problems for years (as evidenced by the fact that he was mentioned in the ideas threads for 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009!) so worth keeping an eye on.

I'm sad to see that this thread has been so shockingly neglected of late.... Larry Stevenson "The Father Of The Modern Skateboard" is supposed to be in the final stages of Parkinson's Disease...

Concerned doctors fear secondary tumours may have developed in her bowel, kidneys and liver.

Eluana Englaro, "Italy's Terry Schiavo" was taken to a clinic last night, who have volunteered to remove the feeding tubes that have kept her alive for the last 17 years.

dead Prince Philip Duke Of Edinburgh

Prince Philip has been forced to miss church, a pheasant shooting party and a public engagement because of ill health. Buckingham Palace say he pulled a muscle in his back while carriage racing. -
Rosario Iglesias, world record holder for the women's 200, 400 and 800 meteres...for those aged 90 or older.

It's the final cut for American film maker Dennis Ray Steckler, 70, who directed numerous obscure cult classics including "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies" and "The Hollywood Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher". He also worked under the pseudonyms Sven Christian, Sven Hellstrom, Harry Nixon, Michael J. Rogers, Michel J. Rogers, Wolfgang Schmidt, Cindy Lou Steckler, R.D. Berta Rosenberg, the world's 19th oldest person (or maybe 18th, given the post above) has died at the age of 112. She was the world's oldest Jew.

Bishop Richard Williamson, who has been in the news this week for denying the Holocaust and then apologising to The Pope for his comments, is reported to be dying of cancer.

I pipped you at the post, old bean. Perhaps, but IMHO he belongs here rather than in some extra-curricular backwater. The man was a living legend, and besides, having checked the records, he is the first scorer to have died of Legionnaire's Disease in a January since Maurice Stump-Oliphant in 1873. Without intending to have a pop at a fine poster such as yourself, TT, this thread is a glorified wikipedia deaths page for those too lazy or unimaginative to acquaint themselves with and utilise these fora's infinitely interesting highways and byways. IMHO. Long live the 'backwaters' and down with The Dead - the spiritual home of iain. I quite like having both options, it all adds to the prevailing sense of anarchy.

Swayze says he hasn't stopped treatment LOS ANGELES, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Patrick Swayze's publicist said the Hollywood actor is still undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, contrary to reports claiming he decided to stop. The reports are not true. Patrick is continuing his treatment, his representative Annett Wolf told People.com, referring to media stories alleging Swayze opted to stop because the treatment wasn't working. The 56-year-old star of Ghost and Dirty Dancing has been battling the disease for about a year. He recently filmed his new television drama The Beast while undergoing chemotherapy. Just as the show debuted earlier this month, the actor was hospitalized for pneumonia for a week.
