    The Dead - 2007

Sad news, I think he was the chap who took an engine out of a jet aeroplane and built a car around it, or something like that. Outlived by his brother Walt Afons- who at 90 is ten years older - he too pioneered jet powered cars. I'd say it's pretty remarkable they both reached old age, considering what they were pioneering.

The Mufti of Australia, Sheikh Fehmi Naji el-Imam, the spiritual leader of Australia's 300 000 strong Halibut community, is facing calls for his resignation as he is too ill to make any public appearances. His health is deteriorating and he has been in hospital since the end of October.

George Moore OBE, 84, Australia's finest ever jockey, who rode the winning horse in The Derby in 1967, is gravely ill. UK obit assured, but he'll really have to show some staying power to get to 2008.

African Leaders - Despots and Democratic

Major Berrington Mkoma has finally been released from jail. 'Unlucky' does not do this man justice - he's had a rough decade. Unpleasant details of some of his treatment during ten years behind bars on trumped up charges of treason can be found here, the article doesn't mention he was also deliberately infected with HIV and subsequently developed Karposi's sarcoma, a cancer common in AIDS victims. Immediately before he was arrested he had the misfortune to witness the horrors of the Rwandan genocide whilst working on a secondment for the UN. On top of all that, the champion of his cause, the British wildlife photographer Nick Gordon, whose life Mkoma saved in Rwanda, dropped dead of a heart attack in 2004. I don't suppose he will get an obit, but he deserves one.

Hank Kaplan, "The Lord of The Ring", the world's foremost expert on the history of boxing, is seriously ill. His fame is a little dubious, but he should get a UK obit as he used to be boxing consultant for The Times. I'm putting him on my DDP if he makes it to 2008.

    Steve Fossett

As OoO has noted on the other thread, Steve Fossett's family have declared him dead. I'm not so sure. Maybe it was his family he wanted to get away from The lack of results from the high resolution image searches lead me to conclude that he might have flown somewhere else altogether. I believe he lives.

I don't have a TV but I happened to be in front of a set last December 31st and saw a New Year interview with the Archbish in which he talked about his cancer having returned, albeit in a non-aggressive manner - hence my inclusion of him in one of my lists for this year. If that is a recent picture of him in the article quoted above, he has certainly lost some weight since the beginning of the year. An article in this weeks Spectator magazine describes Archibishop Tutu as "gravely ill", without elaborating further. I think he's going to kick Peter O'Toole out of 20th place on my DDP team.

    Derby Dead Pool 2008

OoO, I'm really not too sure about your death penalty compromise and I vote that condemned candidates should be banned altogether. In my view, the positives of doing this far outweigh the negatives. At a push I might agree to one candidate, but I dread getting in to a situation where someone wins the DDP by picking The Bali Bombers, the condemned Iraqis, Shoko Asahara and the 6 members of the Bali 9 heroin smuggling gang who have lost all their appeals against execution (who lest we forget are all in their early 20s, thereby insuring a large amount of DDP points). Indonesia and Japan don't announce execution dates anyway. I know I picked the Bali Bombers this year, but that was only as a carefully weighed riposte to all those who had selected Saddam's henchmen and Josie Grove. Maybe we should have a DL poll on the subject? Anyway good luck with your mission, I know the DDP is in safe hands.

One of Devon's most notorious killers, Anthony John Allen, 73, is not in the best of health. This article says that he seriously ill suffering from diabetes, ischaemic heart disease and pleural thickening of the lungs. The poor lamb has just lost a court case, claiming that his human rights were breached because he was kept handcuffed while in hospital. He killed his wife and two children and remained free for 26 years before he was convicted of their murders. Their bodies have never been found.

Danny Federici, founding member and keyboard player with the E Street Band, has had to quit the group because he is serously ill with cancer. This article says he's got melanoma, which I think is one of the nastier types of cancer. I wonder how many unique picks I'm going to manage on the DDP next year

Nicholas Jake Barton, great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill has just pleaded guilty in Australia to getting involved in the supply 250 000 ecstasy tablets. (The Guardian suggest that his haul was worth £6.5 million, which works out at £26 a tablet ) Anyway, of note to deadpoolers was the fact that his mother, Winston's granddaughter, Arabella Spencer-Churchill was not present to support him in court, despite her previous promises to be there. According to the Daily Mail she said Says a family friend: According to The Daily Telegraph, she was seriously ill at the time of her son's arrest in July 2006. No idea what her health problems are, but she'll most certainly get UK obits if she dies. She's quite famous for her involvement in the Glastonbury Festival. She's an interesting lady, Arabella, several years ago I had the pleasure of going to a party at her house and what a party it was Her son would have done some brisk business there...
