    Derby Dead Pool 2017

Banshees would have won the 2009 DDP if Lynda Uttley's obituary hadn't had to wait until February 2010 to be published in The Times. Having said that, if the obit had appeared in the right year and if Eluana Englaro received the unnatural death points she deserved, the winner would have been, er, The Living End.

    Derby Dead Pool 2017

Yes, and if one of them gets a QO, I'll be kicking myself while DDT giggles all the way to the proverbial DDP bank! I think there's a good chance none of them will get required obits! But nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that. I see that Diana Rots is going for a risky strategy of only naming 16 players in their squad. Also, watch out for that crafty Pelican.

    Star Wars Deaths

No longer doubtful - Times Obit: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/opinion/obituaries/article4722566.ece An inquest into the death of Drewe Henley has heard that he choked to death while eating a fish pie. Shame for the DDP team who picked him, as unnatural death points cannot be awarded retrospectively. http://m.exeterexpressandecho.co.uk/star-wars-actor-dies-at-rd-e-after-choking-on-his-lunch/story-30055802-detail/story.html

    Assisted Suicides

Lots of news stories (in French) about the comatose Vincent Lambert flying about at the moment. His wife and some other family members are all for allowing him to die, while his parents are adamantly against the idea and have filed a last ditch legal challenge to prevent the removal of his feeding tubes. Lambert is on my DDP team, so I'm following the case with interest, although the same can't be said for British media sources...

    Gerry Adams & Martin McGuinness

I think this quote from Gerry Adams tells us nothing, but gives away almost everything. "Hopefully" and "pray" (both uttered twice) being the key words. "He's very resilient, he's getting the very very best of medical treatment, so hopefully - and if people pray, they should pray - hopefully he will be back to himself before too long." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-38576702 I hope we get to find out McGuinness' diagnosis. He sounds very like someone with heart problems and looks like someone with cancer, which could mean he has neither, but something just as fatal.... I found his presentation fascinating tbh.

    Gerry Adams & Martin McGuinness

There are growing concerns around the health of Martin McGuinness who hasn't been seen in public for some time http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/concerns-grow-over-absent-mcguinnesss-health-35348305.html ( BTW l've just merged two threads - both started by MPFC! - with the same title, as well as one dedicated to Gerry Adams in his own right and moved the recent McGuinness related posts over from the terrorism thread)

    Dead Pop Stars

He's going to be a popular dead pool pick if they don't treat him right. Edit: For those of you who don't get the reference. In a stable condition following surgery earlier today Lucky man. A ruptured aortic valve has a 90% mortality rate and most victims die before they get to hospital.

PS Nice to see you back Windsor. :-)

    Queen Elizabeth II

I was trying to change the Elizabeth Ii to Elizabeth II, but the forum software wouldn't allow it. So I was left with the option of Elizabeth Ii, Elizabeth I I (the gap between the two I's obviously looks bigger in larger text and slightly ridiculous) or just Elizabeth. I went for the latter option, but should have known it would get the royalists and aspies convulsing and frothing at the mouth. I'll change it to the second option and see how that goes down. For some reason I've started thinking about Blackadder II now.

    Predict The Drop 40

I'm hoping Al-Bagdhdadi makes the top forty. I hesitated before making him captain, but am reasonably confident he should deliver on his potential and deal with the responsibility I have entrusted him with. Should he fail in his task, there will be no third chance for him.

    Spy corner

Heard on the grapevine that former MI5 whistleblower David Shayler is currently very unwell. However, I don't know if his ailment is of a physical or mental nature. Given that he has form for dressing up in drag and proclaiming that he is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, one suspects that it would be the latter, but worth keeping under observation just in case.

    The Chequered Flag

The organiser of the race no less, might be difficult to conduct the health and safety enquiry into this one's meeting with the organiser. Funnily enough, when I was watching the Red Bull Soapbox Racing with my children over Christmas, I thought the safety measures were a bit lax, with competitors hurtling downhill, completely out of control and without any protective headgear. I don't think a fatality in this competition is completely out of the question. Incidentally, the programme was on a channel called 'Dave'.

    2017 Ddp Salvage Lot

Stefan Karl Stefansson - Not sure about obit chances and if he's only just undergone a pancreaticoduodenectomy then he has a chance of getting to 2018 Patrick Cryne - Removed from squad at last moment in favour of Clive James Della Reese - Rumoured to be at death's door over Christmas, but couldn't find anything conclusive...and she's pretty old anyway. Ronnie Campbell MP - Recent attendance record at Parliament tells its own story, but he may bounce back. It is a great time to be a left winger after all. Richard Murray (Charlton Chairman) - Several malignant tumours in stomach and resigning due to ill health doesn't sound too promising, but I gambled and went with Valery Spiridonov instead because I'm an idiot. As for my superstition of always including an Irish person in the team. Last year this happened, effectively losing me the competition. So DDP superstitions are now consigned to the dustbin of history.

    Is The Deathlist Dying?

I just thought I would revive this old thread, as today we have scaled new heights with 614 visitors simultaneously perusing the delights these forums have to offer. The vast majority will only be paying a fleeting visit, but a few will surely stick around and join our friendly, welcoming community. This forum did teeter on the brink at one point - during one weekend in 2010 nobody posted anything at all. Today's stats would indicate that the Deathlist is far from dead. Of course there will always be arguments around quality vs quantity of posts, but I for one am happy to see this forum thriving; we are also currently breaking records in site traffic on a daily basis. 2016 may have been a bad year for death (or a good year, depending on your point of view), but it has certainly hasn't done DL any harm. 2017 will bring new uncertainties for us all. That new axis of evil: Putin, Trump, ISIS and Teresa May may well contribute towards their subjects/victims developing a blacker sense of humour, which can only bode well for this site's prospects, regardless of the celebrity death toll. Merry Christmas :-) DDT

Who Should Be On The 2017 Deathlist?

When the DL forums went haywire in the summer, I capitalised on the situation by asking Grim Reaper if he would put Sister Wendy Beckett on the 2017 list. He says he isn't sure whether she meets the fame criteria, but that she would be discussed. So I am just posting this to remind him. (And it is a long time since the great nun made a public appearance).

We've just broken our all time most online record: 392 Merry Christmas, silent guests.
  24. Gosh, there's a whole lot of effort going into this. My list has four people on it so far, it was five until that pesky Tunisian terrorist got his comeuppance.

    Political Frailty

Paul "Stabber" Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, has bowel cancer which has spread to his lungs and liver. http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/cancer-brexit-austerity-leader-sunderland-12336434 I'm not sure if he'd get the right obit, but he seems like an interesting character. His nickname originates from an incident in 1993, when he was charged with murdering a burglar. https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/mr_david_talbots_murder
