    Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Hi Book, I've merged your thread with the existing discussion, but have retained your title, as -sorry TMIB - I liked it more than Gay De(a)d.

Authors Last A Long Time, But....

Going Underground, you've been around for years, When are you going to get an avatar? As for Herbert, RIP and all that, but I thought the few works of his which I trudged through in my youth were truly execrable. 'The Fog' stands out as a particularly poor example of horror writing, livened only by the hilariously gratuitous lesbian scene.

    Gangster, Gangster

Heroin dealing grandmother Mags Haney is suffering from lung cancer. She is a fairly notorious figure in Scotland for heading up the original media "family from hell" and I think her inevitable demise will make the Scottish press. Even before her diagnosis, she was in poor health according to this article from 2011.

Another pop myth of my youth turns to dust! I was always brought up to believe that Yes were named after Yes Tor on Dartmoor (a wonderful place, where I have spent the odd discombobulated moment). Ah well, at least according to Wiki, Yes did feature the tor on the album artwork for Tormato.

Its a shame we can't see the names of the medications more clearly in that photo, as this would enable us to pinpoint exactly what was going on. I've had another look and the medication for hiccups may be relevant. Hiccups in cancer patients are usually caused by a distended abdomen, which is in turn often the result of cancerous mass in the stomach area, or occasionally because of a large liver tumour pressing on to the stomach. We'll have to wait and see. He'll probably make me look silly by turning out to have arthritis.

    Deathrace 2013

Um....MPFC, I'm not sure I've won yet! Damon Harris' death seems to have propelled me from 1347 to 2063 points. That's very generous, but I fear there has been a miscalculation somewhere down the line?

...all the usual suspects! Unusually, he wasn't mentioned on DL at all last year. I guess everybody hoped no one else had noticed he was dying.

    Read Any Good Books Lately?

For some strange reason, I've always enjoyed Australian literature. About five years ago, I set out on a mission to read every single winning entry of the Miles Franklin Award and I'm nearly done. My favourite three were the almost neverending epic Poor Fellow My Country, by Xavier Herbert, the rather trippy Riders of the Chariot by Patrick White, and (the extremely hard to find) Horse of Air by Dai Strivens. On the other hand, Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey was dire and Eucalyptus by Murray Bail was unreadable. It's been a strange voyage and I can say with some confidence that I'm now better versed in understanding the Aussie psyche than your average Man of Holsworthy.
