Winchester's a lovely place. Shame about their MP. That page mentions a legendary name down our way, Stuart Beavon. That's his son, however, who won it for Didcot. Think he plays in the Conference now. Again, that's the son, not the original. I suppose Salisbury City would count as local rivals to Winchester? As it's where I grew up, I like to see the boys do well. and do well, they're doing.... Looks like a game against Oxford Utd could be in the offing next year. Oh, I thought I'd never live to say that.

    The Dead - 2007

Couple more deaths to report, of most contrasting reasons for fame:- The Bangladeshi terrorist, Bangla Bhai aka Siddiq - ul - Islam has been executed, along with his cronies. UK Obit too... A unique hit for No Noose is Good Noose on DDP, but it may be their last hit as none of the US guys seem to muster obits. and Franco Cosimo Panini, one of the founders of the Panini sticker books loved by millions of schoolkids, myself included has come unstuck.

Same thing as Leeds, except in much smaller quantity. Delusions of grandeur far above their station - all of a sudden - once they were relegated. You remember I said about the Leeds fans being the most snide about us going up? Guess who was 3rd (behind QPR) in the "we should be in the top flight because we're more important than you, even though we weren't good enough" stakes at the end of the season? Birmingham are the same. No-one has a right to be in any division, you have to earn it.... Before the relegation, I think they were everyone's 2nd favourite Premiership team. Again, I also think (relative) locality plays a part in this. Funnily enough though, Southampton's The Dell was the first ground I ever saw, aged 3. Many a trip was made from Odstock to Toys R Us Southampton & I remember seeing this big structure I'd never seen the like of before. Good thing I didn't see Old Trafford or Anfield in 1981 then, as I'd be freaked out for life. I just hate Swansea as they're a bunch of sh*ts, especially Trundle. But then, my grandfather did support Cardiff....

    Arthur C Clarke

I think he falls in the Ray Bradbury/John Mortimer/Gore Vidal (and on his bad days Harold Pinter) category - in a wheelchair, not in brilliant health lately but with enough gumption to keep on going a little while yet.

Absolutely. You'd never find me stooping to such lows. And I mean *Reading 6-0 West Ham United* never. Such behaviour is sooooooooooo *Yep 6-0* childish

    The Dead - 2007

Fay Coyle, who played in the 1958 World Cup Finals for Northern Ireland, has died, only a few days after their magnificent victory over the country where the 1958 Finals were held, Sweden. Hopefully Northern Ireland will qualify for the 2008 European Championships as a tribute.

1985/86 actually. Yes, it still stands. That was my first season watching them, perhaps, for rather obvious reasons. I pleaded with my parents to let me go & watch them at Elm Park, but they were a bit wary after the Bradford Fire, Heysel & the Millwall riot at Luton. RFC vs Notts County was the first one, November 6th (3-1 win), then it was love at 2nd sight with my 2nd game - a 4-3 win against Plymouth - game STILL remembered by any Royals Fan who's been supporting them for 20 years plus. (and evidently by Plymouth fans likewise!) Record Breaking Royals - games, players, scorers. Ah great days..... (Shame it took near 20 years to make it all worthwhile )

    The Weatherman Death Pool

As I'm not entering, one possibility I had originally envisaged, perhaps for CP's DP, was actors & actresses from the film Dead Pool, which was on tonight whilst England stumbled against the mighty Andorra. However, it wouldn't be a team that would likely give you a huge amount of points, me thinks, but it would be a nice twist I suppose AND allow you to put the insufferable Jim Carrey on a DP, as if any more reason were needed.

Because one of the Oxford United directors that backed the move back then is still involved with the club. And although they deny it, there is plenty of contempary newspaper reports that revealed that a number of Oxford United fans were backing the move. (Not all of course, and without some OUFC fan's help we would've struggled to gain enough support) But most importantly, my dear Bald Rick, they're our local rivals & hence we automatically hate them.

MIB, if you read through this thread, you will find I have hated Oxford United since the early 80's, for very good reasons indeed. Leeds from 1996 onwards, so you've got them the wrong way round. QPR are the only other ones. Their fans are complete & utter pricks, the lot of them. I've never met one decent one. They (and the club) have the same mentality as Leeds & accuse us of "Nicking" the hoops, even though we were wearing them BEFORE QPR were even formed! I hate Warnock, but not Sheffield United. And whilst I don't hate them, Chelsea, Swansea City, Birmingham City & Southampton aren't amongst my favourite clubs. Other than that, I love 'em all. EDIT As I lived in Spain for a long time, I also have a hatred of Real Madrid. Every other single Spanish team.. fine & Valencia especially so, but Real Madrid... what a bunch of Maricons.

    World War I Veteran(s)

Oh, by the way, Lloyd Brown now has his own Wikipedia page! Just in time for the WDP. and no, I had nothing to do with it, honestly. I think it's been prepped up for when he dies.

It most certainly is. As for MPFC's claim that Oxford would walk the division They lost to Forest Green Rovers Ah, happy days. Let's hope they f**k up in the play-offs & joy of joys, stay a non-league club. Well done to Dagenham, a welcome addition to the league and only fair as they should've been there instead of Boston, who went up illegally. It will be fitting if Boston go down this year whilst the Daggers come up.

On that note then, don't include Charlotte Winters, US veteran, as she is dead.

    World War I Veteran(s)

Apparently, according to the discussion page on Wiki, US veteran Lloyd Brown is in hospital "and in a bad way" (and this comes from a reliable source). If he lasts til the 31st, it might be worth a consideration for the WDP.

    The Dead - 2007

2003 Nobel Prize winner Paul Lauterbur has died, aged 77.
  16. Octopus of Odstock

    Damn, won't anyone die?

Maybe the other two, but Biggs is going nowhere. I'm quite confident he'll make 80 in 2009. It's been quite quiet anyway lately. To also be fair, bar perhaps Maurice Papon, and arguably Magnus Magnusson (all that was known was he had cancer, not pancreatic cancer), you can argue none of those who have died in 2007 have really been bad misses. Time will tell though if not picking Hazlewood & picking the likes of Eli Wallach will bear out or not.

    The Dead - 2007

I had no idea he was ill. In fact, to be fair, "obscure" fits the bill, as we didn't know an awful lot about his current activities. Decent hill climber, but his career at top level was relatively undistinguished. Proof, by the way here and here. More press coverage than I would've expected. So no "damn" and "blast" but a "oh, that's a shame" from OoO. TIP: The last three F1 drivers to die (Reggazoni, de Graffenried & Schiller) have all been Swiss. If I were you put your money on the next driver to go than you could do worse than go for Swiss driver Heini Walter to go next. He's 79, fat & hasn't been in brilliant health.

    Ideas and possibilities for 2008

It stems back to when they played us in the League Cup in 1996 & 1998. In 1996, the official programme notes were not the norm, extremely disparaging towards us, and in 1998, when we beat them, the vitriol the Leeds fans gave us that night & in the days following for having the cheek to beat the mighty Leeds at Elland Road(!!), stuck long in the memory. Then there was last season, when we "robbed" Leeds of their so-called "rightful place" in the Premiership. That's right.. robbed, even though we got 28 points & finished 4 places above them. Of all our fellow Championship clubs, on balance, their fans were the least supportive & the most snide about us going up as Champions. There's more but I really don't want to go into this in detail any more as this is not the right place & my opinion won't be swayed here as it hasn't been swayed in over 10 years. All I can say is good luck Southend, Barnsley, Hull & Burnley.

    Ideas and possibilities for 2008

If Leeds, Luton AND QPR go down, there is a God after all. Failing that, I'd just settle for Leeds. I will, indeed, be dancing for joy. An Irish jig, followed by a good old boogie, I think. I won't be the only one - the entire 24,000 crowd cheered at half time the other week when Leeds were (at that point) losing to Southend. It's hard to find a more disliked team in the football league and that was BEFORE Ken Bates & Dennis Wise turned up. Anyway, to stay on topic, I see the Burmese have unveiled their new capital with a brief glimpse of Than Shawe whilst they were at it.

Ah good, that's what DL really needed. A tasteless, yet damn funny one-liner. Well done sir, I salute you. Possibly your finest DL moment thus far.

He's just left hospital. It appears he's got treatment in time & it's going well, but that's been said about others. Still, like I said before, I hope in this case all IS fine.

    The Chequered Flag

Locatelli still breathes, but former F1 racing driver Luki Botha doesn't. He passed away last year for anyone who keeps tabs on this kind of thing. (Lawro, I'm looking at you here.)
