    Margaret Thatcher

In that case, perhaps we can also hope for Carol Vorderman to snuff it today as well? (as it is the 1st anniversary of Richard Whiteley's death?)

It's Kenneth Griffith , not Griffiths. It depends on how old you are, Iain, really. More recently, he did less acting, but in most British films in the 1950's, he pops up. Presuming you're under 30 (which I'm guessing from the things you've watched), the best chance of remembering him is from Four Weddings and a Funeral where he played a delightfully eccentric old man talking to Hugh Grant at the first wedding: Still from 4W & AF His list of credits are extensive. He starred in, amongst others, Tiger Bay, a few St. Trinians films, I'm All Right Jack, Lucky Jim, Carelton-Browne of the F.O, Heavens Above!, quite a few episodes of "The Prisoner" alongside old friend Patrick McGoohan, The Lion In Winter, The Assassionation Bureau, Jane Eyre, Colditz, Callan, Who Dares Wins, The Wild Geese & near the end of his acting career, The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. He was also an excellent documentary maker, and on top of that, one of Britain's leading historians on the Boer War. I mean, that's the basics, but read the articles about his death, or use Google for once, you might learn a bit more. But considering some of those you have heard of, or at least post here, Iain, I really don't think you have any right at all to snootily suggest Griffith wasn't that famous. Just because he didn't appear in Dr. Who doesn't mean he's not famous!!

    Robbie Coltrane

Iain, if for once in your life, you could use the search function, you'll find Mr. Coltrane has already been discussed, somewhat in depth, here on deathlist already.

Well, he scored a winning goal in the World Cup Final, so maybe there is some advantage to this one-armed lark after all........

    Charlton Heston

Godot, the whole thing is made up. It's a spoof news site. I saw this report two weeks back on a Google News Search & thought "hold on, if he's making a comment", he can't be that ill. Then I saw it was satire, and the whole thing was a fake and a spoof.

Looks like the biggest news of the day will be the appointment of Paul Tisdale as Exeter City boss, after a hugely successful spell at Team Bath. One wonders what Mr. DDT thinks of this.

    Derby Dead Pool 2006

Yep, their 6th hit now and looking at some of the names on there (Pinter, Spencer, Heston), they could have many more by the years end. With only two hits so far, I've accepted I won't win it or possibly match last years high finish, but I'm just looking for a veneer of respectability as we head into the last 6 months of the year.

There should have been at least two or three more off - Figo for Portugal, Sneijder & Robben for Holland. Very disappointed by Holland's tactics - not giving the ball back, flinging & falling over from start to finish, niggly fouls everywhere. Yes, Portugal did that as well, but I expected them too. I had hoped Holland would not join them. Holland not only joined them, but started it! Gripping game, though. I think the only time there's been a worse-tempered match was the "Battle of Santiago" between Chile & Italy in 1962. In that game there were kung-fu kicks, broken jaws, riot police on the pitch, numerous fights from start to finish, the ref never reffed again..... and only three sent off - this in a day before yellow & red cards, when only the very worst fouls got dismissals. From a DL point of view, maybe Scolari is an interesting outside choice, given his blood pressure levels in this game. Blimey! Trouble is, neither boring old England or dirty old Portugal deserve a semi final place, when the likes of Mexico & Ivory Coast are out, but so be it. Bring on the next game!!!!

But THAT goal made up for it. Probably one of the best goals I've ever seen. Great World Cup this, just keeps getting better & better!

Hugh Baird, former player for Leeds United, Aberdeen & Airdrie, has died, aged 76, just days after being awarded, some 50 years late, his one & only footballing cap for Scotland. A shame, but at least he lived to be awarded the cap. Obit

re. the interview mentioned above: Here's a preview which includes photos of him. Shame I missed it, but there was surprisingly little coverage/fanfare, even on the BBC pages beforehand.

US actor Richard Stahl has died after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Can't say I've ever heard of him or seen him in anything, but his imdb resume means someone here might've done.

Nick Du Toit / Simon Mann / Mark Thatcher

No news, DDT, but there is a BBC drama starring Robert Bathurst as Sir Mark Thatcher on next Friday (30th June) called Coup! Whilst it will not help or hinder Mr. Du Toit's health, it might heighten interest in him from the media, and maybe an update on his condition.

Not only ready to come back, but already back! He said to Wycombe he needed time to grieve properly, then became Northampton Town boss the next day. Methinks that would compound the misery. On a related AND unrelated note (is that possible?) - Fixtures are out tomorrow. Please, Please, Please Fixture Computer:- Arsenal (a) or Watford (h) for our (the mighty Reading FC) first Premiership game. Please not Chelsea (a).

    World War I Veteran(s)

Not any more, I don't think. Harry Patch fought at Passachendale, but I think the last Somme survivor died last year. EDIT After researching a bit further, there is one. Maurice Floquet, a Frenchman, now 111, is not only the sole remaining Somme survivor but probably the last survivor who joined the war at its start in 1914.

Perhaps they count paper planes, birds, balloons & gliders in the total? "if it's in the air & we shoot it down - that's another one notched up"

    Near misses 2006

Shame, as I always think dying just short (ie a month/days) of 100 is wrong somehow. I read the Bette Davis autobiography, More Than A Woman, some 6 or 7 years ago & was amazed that Sherman, who featured heavily, of course, in that book was still alive, back then. Even more amazed he managed to stay alive another seven years. His earlier life was not exactly the cleanest of living. But hey, all the same.

Borat was who I was thinking off in a way though. He's upset the President so much that when the President, Nazarbayev, of that ilk, dies of a heart-attack, enraged by more Borat-like stuff, Nazarbayev's bound to get an obituary. Although, Nazarbayev would probably get one anyway, particulary when it comes to his dictatorship leadership.
