Indeed, Santos is a sad death. I'll see if I tweak some stuff to update the list. Meanwhile, of very slightly more recent vintage, Luis Ubinas, who played for Uruguay in 1966 & 1970 and was a key player in their relatively successful performances at both events, has died - http://spanish.people.com.cn/31615/8331196.html

Don't forget that he was the voice of Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas. That and he also did a Christmas song IIRC with Kim Wilde

Although he's no longer in the public eye, Dickie seems to have his marbles about him and is clearly aware of current affairs - http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/Screen-legend-passionate-City-Culture-bid/story-19374978-detail/story.html#axzz2ZFRTRTBn I wonder if he's just moved in because he's old and wants to be with his wife, rather than anything specific illness.

I go back to the 1982 world cup, but 1986 and 1994 are my favourite tournaments, 2006 was decent too.

Again, if someone clever can do the necessary and tidy it all up, I'd be very appreciative. EDIT - Thanks Death Impends, copied layout again so I can update re. Santos etc. 66 playing survivors (as far as we know)

Omar Sharif. A list. Starred in Doctor Zhivago and Laurence of Arabia (doesn't say biggest grossing), was a good looking man and also well known for saying "Hello, Gorgeous" in one of his films and smoked for a good 35 years before quitting in 1994 after a heart-attack. All those cigarettes catch up eventually.

Good pick, Spade. I considered him, but ruled him out mainly on age grounds, but also I had a tiny concern about an obit, which of course, was folly. Boy, have I learnt my lesson about notability this year.
