drol 12,126 Posted November 3 I admit I'm fighting a possession by The Old Crem. Chinese Politburo member in the 80s, mentor to Hu Jintao, got previous coverage by the Guardian, reportedly in bad health for years. Recently missed the events for the 75th national day of PRC. Above all, 108 next April, and one of the very very few people born in the 10s to be still alive and have legit notability. You probably don't realize how unlikely it is for a top level politician (he is kind the Chinese equivalent of George Shultz) to make this extreme age. In other words, there will be no names this level (very notable already in the 70s/80s) to make this age for a while. Can he become the first really notable supercentenarian? Beside that, God told me Song Ping needs his thread otherwise he won't die.
Captain Hemlock 748 Posted November 3 I have to compliment you and @arghton. Your research into the ones that just will not die is extraordinary. 2
Lafaucheuse 4,073 Posted November 3 About notable supercentanarians : how famous is he compared to someone like Federica Sagor Maas or Ruthie Thompson for exemple ? from the alive centenarians, Muazzez Ilmiye Cig got her wiki page created in 2006, just like Song when she was merely 92 and Marita Camacho Quiros is one that strikes as having a notable status in addition to her longevity. I admit I have few knowledge about Ping life and notability so it’s hard to get how special this is

I admit I have few knowledge about Ping life and notability so it’s hard to get how special this is Much more notable than both of them. He was one of the most powerful people in China in the late 80s, as Head of the Organization Department. Both Tompson and Maas credits were pretty minor in comparison. Quiros is just a longeve first lady, but acquired some notability very recently (just four/five years ago it wasn't even clear she was still alive). Cig shot to fame in 2006 when she claimed things that apparently went against Islam and got tried. Song Ping has had an English wiki page since he was a mere 88, and retired for a lot of years. To me he is the survivor of the 1910s decade. Brenda Milner, Lloyd Geering and maybe June Spencer are the only ones who can compete in terms of notability. Marsh Doll is already on a lower tier. The rest of them are very minor names, shot to fame for their age (see Viola Fletcher) or are age fraudsters (Whang-od, Mwazha, Sharubutu).
