Hailing from Oakland, Pierson cofounded experimental hip-hop groups Subtle and 13 & God, and was affiliated with the Anticon collective. In 2005, while on tour with Subtle, he was left paralysed from the chest down when the tour van hit a patch of black ice in Iowa.
