Soleimani was an Iranian general who became the commander of Iran's Quds Force in 1997, and was known as a close friend of Ali Khamenei. As a general, he notably sent aid to the Assad regime in Syria during its ongoing civil war. Soleimani was killed by a drone strike, along with an Iraqi military commander. Immediately after the news broke out, US president Donald Trump tweeted this image of the American flag, all but confirming that he ordered his assassination. Soleimani's funeral was attended by at least one million people. At his burial on the 7th, a stampede occurred that killed 56 mourners. The following day, Iran launched a missile attack at an American airbase in Iraq.
