Just a heads-up.  Always include the name of the person in your posts.  If there's no name, the search function can't pick it up.

Qasem Soleimani died on this day 3 years ago, aged 62.

image.jpeg.48000674944d3f146eb304519725d7ab.jpeg

Soleimani was an Iranian general who became the commander of Iran's Quds Force in 1997, and was known as a close friend of Ali Khamenei. As a general, he notably sent aid to the Assad regime in Syria during its ongoing civil war.

Soleimani was killed by a drone strike, along with an Iraqi military commander. Immediately after the news broke out, US president Donald Trump tweeted this image of the American flag, all but confirming that he ordered his assassination.

image.jpeg.42650d05f2766b54cdadc1e2e99b70bd.jpeg

Soleimani's funeral was attended by at least one million people. At his burial on the 7th, a stampede occurred that killed 56 mourners. The following day, Iran launched a missile attack at an American airbase in Iraq. You may remember the World War III memes that sparked from this altercation, but ultimately nothing came of it.

Mae Questel died on this day 25 years ago, aged 89.

Mae Questel – Movies, Bio and Lists on MUBI

In 1931, Questel made her debut as the voice of Betty Boop, after getting the attention of Max Fleischer when she did an impression of Helen Kane. She would continue to provide the voice of the character throughout the '30s, and reprised her role in 1988, for a cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Questel was also the voice of Olive Oyl in the Popeye cartoons beginning in 1933, and voiced her until 1962.

In the 1950s, she was the voice of Little Audrey, and provided the voice of Winky Dink on the TV series Winky Dink and You- an early example of interactive TV.

Questel would also seldomly star in live-action roles, and her final role is probably her most well-known in that medium: Aunt Bethany in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

Max Born died on this day 53 years ago, aged 87.

image.jpeg.d2d08c367bd3a15a2d43a58e89bce494.jpeg

Born was a German physicist who began to research special relativity shortly after Albert Einstein published his ideas. In 1925, he and Werner Heisenberg came up with the concept of matrix mechanics, further developing Neils Bohr's description of electrons jumping between energy levels around a nucleus.

In 1926, Born devised the idea of probability amplitude to solve the Schrodinger equation; he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1954 for this.

Born, a Jew, had to flee Germany with his family in 1933, and settled in Cambridge in the UK, where he wrote several scientific books. He became a naturalized citizen on the eve of World War II, and would return to Germany in 1952.

While in England, one of his daughters, Irene, married Brinley Newton-John, having a daughter in 1948- the late Olivia.
