Emperor Hirohito died on this day 34 years ago, aged 87.

image.jpeg.c94ba6c43495906d679891bdb3e99b47.jpeg

Hirohito was the longest-reigning Japanese emperor, reigning for 62 years- December 1926 to January 1989. He was most notable for his role in World War II, and was forced to renounce his god complex that the Japanese believed following it. In the tail end of his rule, Japan was experiencing a massive economic boom.

Hirohito was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 1987, and was in noticeably deteriorating health throughout 1988 (a mystery as to why he was not on DeathList 1989- though he could've been on the missing 1988 list for all I know). He died on the morning of January 7, 1989, and was (of course) the first Japanese emperor to have his death announced on television. (Akihito will likely be the first to be announced via internet)

World War II veterans attempted to pressure world leaders from attending his funeral, but other veterans like George H. W. Bush did so regardless.

Hirohito is often posthumously referred to as the "Showa Emperor".

On this day one year ago in 2022 american actor, bodybuilder and latterly opera singer, Mark Forest died aged 89.

Mark started bodybuilding aged just 13 and went on to own his own gym on Long Island.

A talent scout for Hollywood  having seen a photo of Mark invited him to come to Hollywood and audition for the role of Tarzan.  He wasn't successful but instead became  part of  the Musclemen troupe who supported Mae West in her popular Las Vegas show.

In time he went on to star in very physical roles in 'sword and sandal' otherwise known as peplum movies,  very much in the strongman and beefcake type role including the recurring role of  Maciste.

He had a teal passion for opera and long term both singing and teaching opera is were he took the rest of his career.

Art Clokey died on this day 13 years ago, aged 88.

image.jpeg.ef1de87953406e0cc0ea82e5b12f6ba1.jpeg

Clokey began his career as an animator with 1953's Gumbasia, a stop-motion short film featuring blobs of clay moving to the background music. He would soon find work on The Howdy Doody Show, where he introduced the character of Gumby and his horse Pokey, getting their own show in 1957.

The show lasted all the way to 1969, and has since seen a 1995 film (that was a massive box-office bomb), Eddie Murphy parodying the character on Saturday Night Live, and a slew of dog chew toys.

Clokey was also known for creating the Christian children's series Davey and Goliath (possibly the most-well known in the genre until VeggieTales came along in 1993). The show was known to go into heavy topics- for example, death or racism. It should be noted that Davey's friend Nathaniel was an early example of an African-American friend of a White main character on television (first airing in 1961, in the midst of the civil rights movement).

Bob Saget died on this day a year ago, aged 65.

image.jpeg.0e5a1a5172d72a6dd1fb1ee5a982808e.jpeg

Saget achieved fame by portraying Danny Tanner, one of the main characters (opposite John Stamos as Jesse Katsopolis) of Full House, from 1987 to 1995. Due to the show's popularity, Saget soon found himself as the inaugural host of America's Funniest Home Videos in 1989, remaining on the show until 1997.

Saget would often be typecast as sitcom fathers, including Matt Stewart in Raising Dad (2001-2002) and more notably as the future Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014).

Saget was also a comedian, and in 2005, wrote, directed, and provided the voice of Carl the penguin in Farce of the Penguins, a spoof of the documentary March of the Penguins. The film received negative reviews due to its juvenile humor- also due to copious amounts of footage of penguins fornicating.

Among the last major things Saget did was perform as the Squiggly Monster in season four of the American version of The Masked Singer in 2020, being eliminated on the sixth episode of the show.

Saget unexpectedly died in his sleep due to complications from a fall that led to bleeding in the brain.

This image below features him with two other comedians in their 60s that died within three months after he did (Louie Anderson and Gilbert Gottfried).
