Leni Riefenstahl was born in Berlin and died at the age of 101 in Pöcking 20 years ago. She was a German filmmaker, representative of the ideals of Nazi aesthetics. Her most famous works are the propaganda films she made for the German Nazi Party. Ostracized by the film industry after the war, she became a photographer and diver. Leni celebrated her 101st birthday at a hotel in Feldafing, close to her home, and her health rapidly deteriorated thereafter. Leni died in her sleep on September 8, 2003, at her home in Pöcking, Germany, aged 101. In her obituary, it was said that Leni was the last famous figure from the Nazi era in Germany to die.

William the Conqueror died on this day 936 years ago, aged 59.

image.jpeg.e4f760f2d0289b5862a7891c363592bb.jpeg

- William is also sometimes referred to as "William the Bastard" due to the fact that he was born out of wedlock- his mother Herleva was a mistress of his father Robert, who was the Duke of Normandy. Despite his illegitimate status, he managed to succeed his father as the duke thanks to the support of his great-uncle (who was an archbishop) and King Henry I of France (where he lived).

- William was nearly ousted from his position when he was 18- continued attempts to do so were made until 1060.

- William is best known for his invasion of England in 1066, as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry- this led to the end of the Anglo-Saxon kings, and began the Norman dynasty of England, which lasted until 1135.

- Despite his takeover, William would usually stay in Normandy from 1072 onwards. He would still take residence in England for months on end, however.

- In 1085, William ordered a census to be taken in order for him to properly tax landowners- this was compiled into the Domesday Book, which listed over 250,000 heads of households.

- During the summer of 1087, William led an incursion into Mantes, but soon either got sick or was injured by falling from his horse and got an infection from his wounds. Immediately after his death, those who tended to him stole the clothes and jewels off of his body. During his interment, his bloated corpse did not fit into his sarcophagus, and his innards ruptured when his body was forced in (a similar thing occurred during the funeral of Henry VIII in 1547).

First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964, and Chairman of the Council of Ministers from 1958 to 1964 Nikita Khrushchev died on this day 52 years ago, aged 77. During his rule, Khrushchev stunned the communist world with his denunciation of his predecessor Joseph Stalin's crimes, and embarked on a policy of de-Stalinization with his key ally Anastas Mikoyan. He sponsored the early Soviet space program and the enactment of moderate reforms in domestic policy. After some false starts, and a narrowly avoided nuclear war over Cuba, he conducted successful negotiations with the United States to reduce Cold War tensions. In 1964, the Kremlin leadership stripped him of power, replacing him with Leonid Brezhnev as First Secretary and Alexei Kosygin as Premier.

Johnny Cash died on this day 20 years ago, aged 71.

Johnny Cash - Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum

- Cash's birth name was the initials "JR"- his parents couldn't compromise on naming him "John" or "Ray" (considering the order, it seems that John won). Because he was unable to use initials in the military, he legally changed his name to "John R. Cash".

- During his service, Cash was reportedly the first American to receive the news of Joseph Stalin's death (given to him via Morse code, likely from a mole in Russia).

- During his career's high point in the '60s, Cash was addicted to amphetamines- a short time in jail got him sober, but he was reusing them by 1977, and completely dependent on them by 1989.

- Cash was 1/4th Cherokee, and as such was an activist for Native American rights. He would be made an honorary member of the Seneca Tribe in 1968.

- Cash made a few TV appearances- most notably on four episodes of Sesame Street, and as a talking coyote in Homer's hallucination in a 1997 episode of The Simpsons:

- Late in his career, Cash would be known to cover songs (primarily from rock and grunge bands)- most notably his swan song, his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt":

- Cash would be diagnosed with multiple system atrophy in 1997, initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease, and given 18 months to live. The following year, he came down with a severe case of pneumonia, and in 2000 would make his debut on the DeathList. Cash ended up dying from complications of his diabetes about four months after his wife June's death; he would be the 13th death of the (then-record-breaking) 2003 list (the last of four within a week).

Afonso VI of Portugal was born in Lisbon and died in Sintra 340 years ago at the age of 40, he was the King of Portugal and Algarves from 1656 until his death, the second Portuguese monarch of the House of Bragança, His reign saw the end of the War of Restoration and recognition by Spain of Portugal's independence. Afonso also negotiated alliances with France through his marriage to Maria Francisca de Saboia. American actor, director and singer Anthony Perkins died on this day 31 years ago, aged 60. His first film, The Actress, costarring Spencer Tracy and Jean Simmons and directed by George Cukor, was a disappointment save for an Oscar nod for its costumes, and Perkins returned to the boards instead. He made his Broadway debut in the Elia Kazan-directed Tea and Sympathy where he played Tom Lee, a "sissy" cured by the right woman. He was praised for the role, and after it closed, he turned to Hollywood once more, starring in Friendly Persuasion (1956) with Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire, which earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best New Actor of the Year and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Rushes of the film led to Perkins landing a seven-year, semi-exclusive contract with Paramount Pictures. He was their last matinee idol.

Emperor Titus died on this day 1942 years ago, aged 41.

image.jpeg.0533cb049ec3fd60ee2c6aa3df0e49ee.jpeg

- The son of Emperor Vespasian, Titus would serve as a military commander in the First Jewish-Roman War. When his father became emperor in 69, Titus was put in charge of the Roman army, and would capture Jerusalem the following year- notably destroying the Second Temple in the process.

- Titus would become emperor in 79. Mere months into his reign, Mount Vesuvius would erupt and bury Pompeii and Herculaneum; he would organize and fund the relief effort for the citizens of the destroyed cities. A fire would also break out in Rome in 80, which destroyed the third incarnation of the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus.

- Also in 80, the Colosseum would finish construction- it still stands mostly intact to this day, attracting millions of visitors to Rome every year:

image.jpeg.5a3e9660fed75dfbe0e9befb9ecbe2b8.jpeg

Titus would order the construction of a new public bathhouse to open alongside the stadium. The dedication of these two buildings are Titus' final recorded act as emperor.

- Titus reportedly died of a fever, although there are some other theories. One suggests his brother poisoned him by putting a sea slug in his meal, while rabbinic sources claim that a fly flew up his nose and picked at his brain for several years (definitely false considering the lifespan of insects).

- Titus would be succeeded as emperor by his brother Domitian, who deified him as his first imperial act.
