King Fulk of Jerusalem died on this day 880 years ago, aged 54.

image.jpeg.e05e12a0671a6df310cbe19905cfa789.jpeg

- Fulk was French, and was the son of count Fulk IV of Anjou. He succeeded his father in the position upon his death in 1109, as Fulk V.

- Fulk would go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1119, and would help fund the recently-founded Knights Templar. He planned to return to France in 1127, but king Baldwin II wanted him to marry his daughter Melisende. Fulk agreed to this on the terms he would rule alongside her, and would forfeit Anjou in favor of his son Geoffrey (Plantagenet) to stay in Jerusalem.

- Fulk would become king of Jerusalem in 1131, and effectively made himself the sole ruler. He was not well-liked by other crusader states' rulers (thinking he would invade them) and the general populace (who were more loyal to Melisende). Fulk would only acquiesce power to Melisende after an assassination attempt on him in 1134.

- Fulk would die after a 12-year reign while hunting- his horse fell and he was struck in his head by its saddle. Melisende outlived him, but their son Baldwin III would reign with her.

- Fulk was the paternal grandfather of king Henry II of England.

Barbara Park died on this day 10 years ago, aged 66.

image.jpeg.8e3653d26a19e29a097f225baa122bc2.jpeg

- Park was an author of children's novels that dealt with serious topics- these included Mick Harte Was Here (1995), about a girl dealing with the premature death of her brother in a bicycle accident, and The Graduation of Jake Moon (2000), about a boy dealing with his grandfather's Alzheimer's.

- Park was however best known for her Junie B. Jones series of illustrated novels, which she began writing in 1992- in a way, these were the Diary of a Wimpy Kids of the '90s. 31 books were made, and have sold over 55 million copies worldwide:

image.jpeg.381973dbe04deebe494a0b501bd67d37.jpeg

These books have also been constantly challenged by schools due to Junie being a bad role model for children (kind of like Greg Heffley of the aforementioned DoaWK series).

- Park died from ovarian cancer. The last Junie B. Jones book, Junie B. Jones: Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and Other Thankful Stuff), was released posthumously, ten months after her death.

She did a book reading at my elementary school for Mick Harte. We were all crying; I won't forget that book. It was very good at teaching kids to wear helmets.

- From a young age, Edwards was a radio announcer, and would often introduce radio show hosts. He would also provide his voice for trailers for upcoming Laurel and Hardy movies.

Henry III of England died on this day 751 years ago, aged 65. He was King of England, Lord of Ireland, and Duke of Aquitaine from 1216 until his death in 1272. He is the son of King John and Isabella of Angouléme, Henry assumed the throne when he was only nine in the middle of the First Barons' War. Cardinal Guala Bicchieri declared the war against the rebel barons to be a religious crusade and Henry's forces, led by William Marshal, defeated the rebels at the battles of Lincoln and Sandwich in 1217. Henry promised to abide by the Great Charter of 1225, a later version of the 1215 Magna Carta, which limited royal power and protected the rights of the major barons. His early rule was dominated first by Hubert de Burgh and then Peter des Roches, who re-established royal authority after the war. In 1230, the King attempted to reconquer the provinces of France that had once belonged to his father, but the invasion was a debacle. A revolt led by William Marshal's son Richard broke out in 1232, ending in a peace settlement negotiated by the Church.

Thomas Pelham Holles- or Lord Newcastle- died on this day 255 years ago, aged 75.

image.jpeg.0ec95234268cf3003ade895b671925c7.jpeg

- Newcastle was the first of his family to use a double surname- his father was (Baron) Thomas Pelham, and his mother was Grace Holles.

- A partisan Whig, Newcastle would organize street fights with Jacobite opponents following the death of Queen Anne. His support of King George I earned him the title of the Earl (later Marquess) of Clare.

- Newcastle entered Parliament sometime in the late 1710s. He served as Secretary of State from 1724 to 1748- during this time, he oversaw domestic and foreign conflicts such as the War of Jenkins' Ear, the War of the Austrian Succession, and the 1745 Jacobite uprising.

- Newcastle became Prime Minister upon the death of Henry Pelham (his younger brother) in 1754. The Seven Years' War began during his premiership, and he would be ousted as PM in 1756 due to poor foreign policy decisions. Regardless, he returned to the role in 1757, and would be dismissed again in 1762 by King George III (having preferred Lord Bute). Newcastle was the last Prime Minister to be removed by a monarch (before said power was allocated to the legislative branch).

- Because of his ineptitude, Newcastle was often lampooned by 18th-century satirists:

image.jpeg.12bcad4e31c830466545eb72f717e5e1.jpeg

(This 1761 political cartoon depicts Newcastle (on the right) as a knave- the fox on the left is Baron Holland (a pun on his real name, Henry Fox).)

- Newcastle would retire from politics in 1765. He suffered a stroke in December of 1767 (prime material for deadpoolers from 1768), dying eleven months later.
