Foreign Personalities, From Stage, Screen, Politics And Life

Recommended Posts

I've split this foreign film thespian info from the (completely inappropriate) Academy Awards thread, (where I had originally posted it a while back.) All of my years watching sexy foreign babes on Australia's infamously liberal-minded SBS network is now paying off as I share my amassed knowledge of these (formerly) sexy babes:

*****
Here is the info to kick-start this thread, copied over:

Danielle Darrieux, very famous in her home country, who was born in 1917 putting her up there with Joan Fontaine and Olivia De Havilland.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danielle_Darrieux

Judging from her filmography, she is still active but might be an interesting one to watch.

*****
some vintage Japanese actresses, both born in 1920:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setsuko_Hara

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshiko_Ōtaka

Hara starred in Tokyo Story whilst Otaka was in Kurosawa's Scandal, billed as Shirley Yamaguchi.

*****

Dora Doll, born in 1922, is a well-known German/French actress from gangster and thriller films, such as Touchez pas au grisbi.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dora_Doll

*****

Emmanuelle Riva, born 1927, is best known for Hiroshima, Mon Amour, but has also starred in many other films. Still seems to be active, so maybe not a good pick just yet but I'll put her here for future reference:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmanuelle_Riva

*****

Jeanne Moreau is also starting to get long in the tooth, being born in January 1928 but, like Riva, she is still very active so probably just another one to bookmark for the moment:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanne_Moreau

*****

Once we reach the early 1930s, a whole string of notable foreign actresses are still with us, including Monica Vitti and Lucia Bose but one worth looking at is Anita Ekberg, who has had some health problems:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Ekberg

"Despite her condition not being considered serious, she has been put under observation in the facility", or so says that oracle of all truth, Wikipedia. dry.png

Some more vintage actresses:

Barbro Kollberg, born 1917, is still going. She wasn't too prolific but did star in some of Ingmar Bergman's early work:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbro_Kollberg

*****

Francois Arnoul, born 1931:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7oise_Arnoul

*****

Margarita Lozano, also born 1931:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margarita_Lozano

*****

Harriet Anderson, born 1932:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harriet_Andersson

*****

Stephane Audran, also born 1932:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St%C3%A9phane_Audran

*****

No idea how many of those would receive UK obits. Most were fairly prolific in their heydays but some have moved into TV in recent decades, meaning they are known only to local audiences.

To be honest, most Euro-actresses seem to have fairly long lives, avoiding the excesses of their Hollywood counterparts. The only ones to have died relatively young in recent times that I know about are Maria Schneider, Annie Girardot and German raunch-babe Barbara Rudnik.

Don't know about the states of health of the male actors out there but Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo are both getting long in the tooth but still seem fairly active.

Might also be worth thinking about directors. With Claude Chaubrol going last year, not many of the French Nouvelle Vague times are still around apart from the likes of Jean-Luc Godard. Polanski could be classified as a foreign film director, too, though there is probably already a thread for him floating around somewhere.

Beatrice Dalle, (the crazy girl from Betty Blue) seems fairly self-destructive. She has been up on drug charges in the past and married a jailed convict at one stage, divorcing him when he was released from prison and started abusing her...

*****

I think it has been mentioned elsewhere but Sylvia Kristel has lung cancer which is reportedly spreading:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Kristel

She is probably our best chance at this stage.

*****

Speaking of "Emmanuelles", one of Emmanuelle Beart's lovers apparently killed himself in 2003:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmanuelle_Beart

Also, Emmanuelle Seigner, Polanski's wife might be worth keeping an eye on. She must have a lot of stress in her life and also must put up with his reputation for very weird sex (apparently Bitter Moon is fairly autobiographical  )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmanuelle_Seigner

*****

Brigitte Bardot may also be an extreme outside chance with her far-right views provoking people from time to time (okay, grasping at straws here).

Leslie Caron is still going (I thought she was dead but it turns out I was confusing her with Cyd Charisse  ) She will be a certainty for a UK obit, given her roles in US musicals (in fact, she really didn't work much at all in her home country.)

May I suggest Dutch actor Rutger Hauer1?

As far as I know, he's fit as a fiddle, but at 71 he's getting on a bit.

1 and my childhood hero, as he played Floris:

Gods, I feel almost as ancient as Josco now.

Didn't realise he was so old. He will always be Roy Batty (from Blade Runner) to me.

The only other Dutch thespian I really know is Renee Soutendijk. I was just the right age to "appreciate" her bath scene when De Flat came on television here one night  . (My monitor is steaming up just thinking about it!)

There's always Jeroen_Krabbé, for all your German baddie parts.

And yes, I remember that scene. It caused quite a stir in these parts.

Actually, I just recalled to mind something that I had completely forgotten about: during the 1990s, SBS Australia aired a Dutch comedy series set in a block of flats. I think some of the characters were dentists but the most memorable one was the nosy/fussy old lady who lived downstairs. Do you have any idea of the show I am talking about and, if so, is the actress who played the woman still alive/in good health?

EDIT: I know Krabbe as the bloke who played the Sheriff of Nottingham-type in the Patrick Bergin/Uma Thurman Robin Hood mega-flop that no one much has ever seen.* He played the Sheriff as an evil Norman who faced off against the ever-so-noble Anglo-Saxons.

* Don't bother - it is even worse than the cartoonish Costner one.

Must've been Zeg 'ns Aaa. That actress is Carry Tefsen. At 72 (yes, I checked twice) she's still profesionally active.

Cheers! Yes, that is her. I ran the the articles through Babelfish and the one about her character mentioned her "very shrill voice." That is awesome - I had totally forgotten that show but I watched it after school some evenings.

Didn't realise Renee Soutendijk's scene was so controversial over there too, since we have this stereotype in our minds of all Dutch people being very liberal and laid-back about such things compared to us prudish Aussies.

Hey, this is weird... Carry's character was named "Mien Dobbelsteen", right?

Then this, by coincidence must be someone else who just died:

"Actor Mien Dobbelsteen is reported to have died shortly after a snowboard accident earlier today - March 25, 2011."

http://mien.dobbelsteen.mediafetcher.com/n...ctor_skiing.php

Unless it is a spamming/autogenerated site...

Traps for young deathlisters to beware! Cheers.

I don't think it's that bad.

A bit of fiddling with the knobs gave me this bomb shell about Rutger Hauer. We should have known, considering the opening shot of Turkish Delight.

regatds,

Hein

Thinking about it, I guess the "biggest" foreign film actress deaths (besides the likes of Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn) would have been the suicides of Jean Seberg (yes, I know that she was technically an American) and Romy Schneider.

Have there been any other particularly notable deaths (young/tragic/shocked their country/etc)?

Dunno whether he's come up in other threads but Gerard Depardieu doesn't appear to be in the rudest of health these days...

Sticking with Gallic thesps, Michael Lonsdale (b. 1931) perhaps best known internationally for playing the James Bond villain Hugo Drax in Moonraker, is one to keep an eye on. Still active in film mind, even managed to attend Cannes last year.

May be stretching things somewhat as he is primarily a singer (though he has acted in many films), but French rock God Johnny Hallyday (b. 1943) doesn't seem to be a very well man, was treated for colon cancer in 2009 and that same year suffered complications during surgery for a herniated disc, and at one point had to be placed into a medically-induced coma...

Yes, I remember the fuss about Hallyday. I recall he appeared as a boxer in Godard's Detective (which I can take or leave) but I didn't know he had acted in anything else.

Depardieu has always been flabby, which doesn't make for a long life...

Cheers Chorizo, me ol' sausage! Harriet is on Page 1 but I didn't mention Bibi. Liv's probably still a bit young unless she's had health problems. Didn't think of Inga Landgre, even though I have seen the Seventh Seal. She's in the right age zone but her obit may go either way, as you state.

Just stumbled across this thread pertaining to some French actress named Valeri\e Quennessen who may or may not have died in a car crash years ago (I haven't read all 200+ posts about the mystery yet):

http://www.topix.com/forum/fr/paris/TAQO0BMPBK6MET4BC

Edit: Okay, she is definitely dead. Moving on.

Johannes Heester, a Dutch actor, is still going, having been born in 1903(!) The old boy has apparently "spoken fondly of Adolf Hitler in recent years."

http://en.wikipedia....hannes_Heesters

Paulette Dubos, born in 1910, is also still with us. She appeared in over 250 films, including one directed by Jean Renoir:

EDIT: Died in September 2011
