Thursday, September 15th:

PARIS (AFP) - Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been hospitalised in Paris for over a fortnight, "likely" has stomach cancer, a leading French doctor said based on a description of his symptons.

"It is very hard to make a diagnosis. If it is true that he first suffered gastrointestinal blood loss, then it is likely to be stomach cancer," Bernard Debre, head of the urology department at Paris's Cochin hospital, siad Thursday.

"I say likely, because I cannot see what else it could be," the doctor, who did not personally examine Bouteflika, told France Inter radio.

The 68-year-old Algerian leader was operated for a "bleeding stomach ulcer", according to a medical statement issued on December 5 -- the only official information about his condition since he was hospitalised on November 26.

Algerian officials have since said Bouteflika was recovering normally in hospital, but there has been worried speculation that his condition may be more serious than publicly admitted.

Schmidt still jetsetting

Funny you should mention him just as I was looking for somewhere to post this article. Looks robust & frequent flying means he isn't on deaths door yet, even if he does like a cigarette or 70.

Not for DL 2007, me thinks.

Helmet was just included because of his age. A few days ago I did some research, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is going to die, the egyption president probably won't, but he is named because of his cancer. Overall a few of these names should be successful next year.

Aside from the obvious.......that there is a thread for 2007 possibles I am disgruntled that you neglected several fine choices and misspelled candidate.

There are many good choices on that list RA. There is a question I have been meaning to ask you though. How do you come up with a scoring system for your choices? Is there a certain amount of points you allocate for old age, health, hospital visits, illness, etc and how do you allocate them?

Regards,

Hi Football Fan

Sometimes it a rule of thumb - but I've standardised a factor of seriousness from say 3 months to live 70points in its own right down to say 0.33 points for each year of parkinsons. Prognosis, complaint and condition added to how often their name crops up (OoO was so very helpfull) plus a tiny fraction of times picked by the hords on Rotten.com (still cross checking the top 100 choices) plus a larger fraction for previous picks on DDP. (I'm still adding new names from this years DDP) (going to mash into it the lists from HPDP & CPDP) Adding into the mix a "near death" figure - for open ended pools a straight line graph, and from those pools with a banding - ones rigged with a sawtooth bias towards age grouped to match so as to gain maximum points verses risk of waisting choices.

Bartholomew Ulufa'alu is going on my DDP next year. Anyone with a name as fantastic as that is deserving of more widespread recognition.

51.52 Waldheim

56.84 Blair

You think Blair will go before Waldheim?

Both the Bushes will go before Mandella?

I think you need to review your equations man.

Blimey, and I thought I was taking deadpools far too seriously!

George HW Bush lives beyond his sons presidency. Tony Blair lives for many years. George W Bush lives for many years. Nelson Mandella has a few moments - hopefully.

Come on guy's stop having a go at my maths - I'm also factoring into the equation that Blair has heart problems and like the guy who can't eat a few pretzels without half choaking himself to death are both major targets for all those family members of 500,000 dead Iraqi's to go seeking some revenge.

Well, on that basis, change your maths. There's more Jews than Iraqi's waiting to exact revenge on ol' Nazi Kurt. Who, as it has been discussed already on this fora, is not a well old man.

Redo your equations sonny.

Blair's heart problem is supraventricular tachycardia. Unlike ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia is not generally fatal.

He underwent an ablation for it and, if successful (which it was supposed to have been) he shouldn't have anymore irregular heartbeat.

Most people with SVT don't have the ablation as it is controllable with medication - and sometimes without medication - but if I was the cardiologist for the Prime Minister I'd recommend the ablation as well.

I have a cardiac arrythmia myself (premature ventricular contractions), and I don't expect it to lessen my lifespan. Some of the other things I have done, now, are another story.....

I suggest you think again.

Ulufa'alu has made a full recovery from his emergency stay in hospital and resigned his post as finance minister on Monday over the Solomon Isle's links with Australia.

You can add him on for the name, but don't expect him to die.

That is a shame. Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah it is then.

Ian Paisly has been moving about a bit too much for an 80 year old recently, he's giving an interview every news programme that'll have him. Seems fairly healthy at the minute but is supposed to be just getting over a long unspecified illness, prehaps next year-dying just before he becomes first minister.

this article (so hot off the press it is has tomorrow's date) is still referring to Ulufa'alu as gravely ill.
