Rail Privatisation: Yay Or Nay?

Recommended Posts

Having just put up with the trip from hell courtesy of our utterly bollocks government-run railway, I am wondering how you Brits have fared with rail privatisation. Do you consider things to be better or worse from a commuter's perspective?

Please list pros and cons. I would prefer answers that focus on the pragmatics rather than political ideology.

The service in the UK is more reliable (at least on the main lines) and there has been an investment in rolling stock and stations. However it is prohibitively expensive. I turned down a job in London because once I had paid for a season ticket I would have less money than my current job. Some commutes complain of over crowding and rural services get a rough deal. Some of the companies are pulling out or have had their franchise taken away. The infeastructure company had to be renationalsed under the last labour goverment after the whole thing went pear shaped.
