The Chequers.

This appears to be from someone who had their album which includes Rock On Brother: https://johnkatsmc5.tumblr.com/post/614590008195694592/the-chequers-check-us-out-1976-uk-disco-soul however he does say it's a 6 man outfit so I'm guessing he includes John Mathias (producer and composer) and Tom Moulton that he mentions. I guess we could have a look for these if you think it's worth it?

Congas – Mike Spears
Flute – Andy Dummit
Saxophone – Andy Dummit
Strings – Ken Freeman
Synthesizer – Ken Freeman
Trumpet – Mike Phillips

Valance's entry updated. He was a bizarre one. It's almost unheard of for a solo act to have a #1 hit and then have no other charting singles.

Yup, you're right. Missed this earlier. He was also a backing singer for the Biddu Orchestra. I've updated the entries for Steve Allan and The Carvells to reflect this. Cheers!

Interesting. The BBC obit says he was 84, not 81. There was a 1936 DOB for him floating around online but the 1939 one seemed to be more commonly favoured.

I can see where the confusion has arisen from. It's the GRO Index:

SPENCER, David R. b. 1936 (2nd quarter), Monmouthshire. Mother maiden name: LEWIS
SPENCER, David E. b. 1939 (2nd quarter), Monmouthshire. Mother maiden name: LEWIS

Seeing as the Beeb spoke to his agent, likely the first one is correct.

Probably the most definite for The Chequers though it may be all the players were involved somewhere. See the picture here and the line up (some mis-spellings? Spears and Speers?): http://www.45spaces.com/pop-stars/r.php?r=pop772900

Think that's me for this section.

Cats UK - turning turning over stuff and coming up with nowt.

Carvells - Stapleford working for Resonance FM; Griffiths takes up photography and moves to Tennessee, who knows where, Couloris I've heard or seen that name before somewhere but can't remember, Dunstan eludes.

It's good because you are obviously getting clued in the searches leaving me with nothing.

I think maybe I got Ricky Valance mixed up with Ray Peterson who had the original hit in the 60s  of Tell Laura I love Her  . Still I had heard of him so maybe he was quite famous in his own right.Must be if he got a BBC obit !

Cirrus.

Probably not telling you anything you don't know. Graham de Wilde did the original advert music, probably using session musicians. Now this man has form, appearing on a couple of 80s hits notably Wikka Wrap so I've looked into his stuff before - I'd put money on him double tracking himself on this single. Co-writing credit goes to Bert Weedon - I'd stake my life on him playing guitar on it and if he's credited it's probably because he was involved in extending a 1 minute track into a 3min 50 single.

All this for 1 week at #62? Jeez!

Chic.

Andy Schwartz is also known as Andrew Barrett and this is him: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0057059/ If you look up Andrew Barrett on Discogs you'll find his alias is Andy Schwartz. Definitely him, I've linked this with a Chic site which I can go back to if you need.

Rob Sabino is one of the most famous unknown keyboard players out there - he's played on loads of things. Now while I'm struggling to pin anything concrete down, I'm fairly confident we can say he was born in the Bronx, NYC in 1953. We have this: https://www.villagelife.com/news/church-music-director-is-so-chic/?__cf_chl_captcha_tk__=369f7de8e3491ef7c4357dc54fc25e6bb07ced45-1592331489-0-AZ14DBSW4sfnmTQgNpyVCJ3k6cDMhHCQiCVe1D5Nue8-whkmg49rNc5DsjxsS-gbfaIILg1dOjPNgPKLQXCdQYX2QMsTNhymgYwQSeKrW5efhyrWwRtmfzVP2jKvxzL6auev03LDa2kXFsKyYbR79TMujwuW3l1sf8rf613f8V3b5N7dOzIBC1XMVXiLyjxKA710hyAS3EkHmCWDqTnhJPX139z4Dzz81aOTj0rQHGdK_L4khJW_vSJ5qU09fje6FJdoNwvOCx81wtTbaSbHb9_nomU6smGH7QqN7TjlDGNZBB2xsTTIlWxlBNsFkREaAUjWjjbJZIOEucb347336xROivwzODYvSBAHcUFUK6HZ-IrPRD4oLzcOBfLEtrYVSFLH-_h-yGZG3kW92FlGMcnolXxIHsHWy0WLRpbuhDUa_0ozfjidGRszXdNM52hlDdqBb4ejFwGpaCIq3lWIqdKWMVdOLvBSoxD7utTgm_VR_RGKJz5oSjtOK-aUeYvTovfxBkBvoGf2tC0B0tp5dhDSE6msVOriiEpt2MEHWBz9 which, once you get by the security says he was 39 in 1992 when he met his wife. We also have this from March 2020 in which he says fairly early on in the interview that he's 66: https://sharkeystreehouse.com/raising-hairs-on-the-arms-of-chic-and-david-bowie-keyboardist-rob-sabino/

Marianne Carroll is the most frustrating. I haven't joined LinkedIn but this is her page: https://www.linkedin.com/authwall?trk=gf&trkInfo=AQFZAn74DRuESAAAAXK-gqrwOOgJW4wP2cmzKPxU0Q9AzMjkgEtQJHzR1p8e5Mm3F0Dg12MAjHxf1vlVYLkYHB-f2_wkuU4AnfjIYvmdZfJO-RUUz8cipOCgxLy37w9fwmFbyX8=&originalReferer=https://www.google.co.uk/&sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fmarianne-carroll-55883385

And this seems to be her work: https://www.hcsonline.com/about-us/staff/marianne-carroll quite clearly happy to disclose her Chic history, if not her bloody age.

Thanks, I've added this in the notes section. I may get in touch with Graham through that site and ask.

Whilst I'm here, and before I update Chic, Sue Glover (Brotherhood of Man) got back to me. Confirmed her sister Sunny is living in retirement. Didn't respond to my request for DOBs though!

Last for this section - been at it for hours and I think I'm of little help anyway.

The Chords - the elusive Martin Mason seems to have given up on the band possibly appearing with them only until 2012 or so. Now there's this informative blurb which does indicate that Mason and his cousin Billy Hassett were around the same age with Chris Pope being a year younger. http://www.chrishunt.biz/features54.html So possibly you can say that Mason is born 1959 or 1960.

Edit: There is this:

City Boy - all I have on Roy Ward that he was either from or at some point resident in Harrow and possibly the Roy is for Royston.

Edit: And then there is this:

Utterly dispiriting after my success with Chic!

Next!

Added that to Mason.

Found this for Roy Ward: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=IWI6keyMDxQC&pg=PT50&dq="roy+ward"+lion+sleeps+tonight&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiBoIf-74jqAhWNTxUIHXs8AOQQ6AEIPTAC#v=onepage&q="roy ward" lion sleeps tonight&f=false

This places Ward in Rugby. Given Jason Pierce's age and that Pierce was still at school, that sort of places Ward there sometime between 1978 and 1982 I'd say.

Definitely not the Scottish band! So the deal with this one was to look up the arranger Joe Malbo. Which turns out to be an alias of this guy, Pinuccio Pirazzoli. Who is definitely most certainly the guy playing the guitar on the TOTP clip!

I think we can safely say there were 4 session singers there for dressing. I just can't get a good enough resolution on the album to read the bottom which might have given us a clue as to the identity of these people.

Disco California Dreamin'? My ears, they bleed!
