I don't agree, I think he's a very good actor. The first role I saw him in was in 24 Hour Party People as Tony Wilson. I was very dubious ("Steve Coogan? WTF?") but although he bears no resemblance at all to Tony Wilson, he inhabited the character so well that I very quickly forgot it was Steve Coogan.

    General Election 2024?

Somebody from another country posting on Twitter noted that Sunak left early "leaving Grant Shapps as the UK representative". This person apparently oblivious to the presence of the King, the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal - but still, it's a very bad look.

    World War II Veterans

I was at the 40th D Day anniversary commemorations in Normandy. Believe it or not, at the time it was being touted as the last big anniversary as there wouldn't be many left by the 50th! Utter nonsense, as I thought at the time. Many of the D Day veterans were only about 60. I can't believe it was 40 years ago. Feel old no, I don't. I feel just the same as I did then.

The only thing I've turned on the TV for in months is Inside No 9, and then the wonderful film 'A Foreign Field' which happened to be on BBC4 after it and which I hadn't seen for years. Go to iplayer and watch it! It will make you laugh a lot and cry a bit, and you will never forget it.

I don't think the mintage has been released yet for the Coronation 50p, but the QEII Memorial 50p mintage was 9,600,000 so there should be plenty of those about. The Royal Mint don't make it easy to find info about circulating coins on their website, but I tracked it down eventually. https://www.royalmint.com/corporate/circulating-coin/uk-currency/mintages/50-pence/

Well, Cameron's a local boy like I said, but Coutinho was hand-holding in Hungerford the other day, so yes. He can promise absolutely anything , in the confident knowledge that he won't have to do any of it.

    Seen Any Good Films Lately?

I've just seen again one of my favourite films on BBC4 - quite by chance, channel surfing after Inside No 9 finished. I mentioned the film not so long ago in a conversation about Jeanne Moreau. A Foreign Field is about a group of people visiting Normandy on the 50th anniversary of D Day. It is a character-driven comedy and very funny, but also very moving. It was first shown on BBC in the 1990s. I've never seen it since. Stellar cast including Alec Guinness, Leo McKern, Lauren Bacall, Jeanne Moreau. Do try and catch it on iplayer if you can, it's only on for a month. It's mostly hilarious but Alec Guinness's character will break your heart. You will probably guess the ending as I did first time round, but it still had me in tears again. In a good way - it's not depressing. A really lovely film that's rarely shown.
