Broken hip. As I suspected, they downplayed the situation.

At her age, a broken hip can be the beginning of the end.

Hip fractures are indeed very dangerous at nearly 85 years old, but she is a healthy weight, active, and seems to be otherwise healthy. With the quality healthcare she receives, I bet she'll be fine, though I do expect her to retire after this term. I've known people in their 90s to survive years after hip fractures.

My grandmother fell over the dog and broke her hip when she was 89.

Back then they didn't do hip replacements.  She spent a while in hospital, mending, came home and carried on until she was 100.

My Grandma fell and broke her collar bone 2 years ago at 95 and is still going at 97 even if she has gone down a lot recently, her iron levels are down, don’t think that can be attributed to her fall, but then again breaking your collar bone although not great at her age isn’t as bad as your hip. My friends Grandma died recently at 92, after falling and breaking her hip in September, I think a lot depends on overall health of individual and if they have strength and will power left to fight it at their advanced ages, it isn’t always a death sentence but in a lot of cases it is, luck of the draw I suppose.
