That will amount to being a subject of a German royal family which has taken over from a French royal family.

I always find it very strange that people say this. I don't get how you figure that the Royal family is German. Is it that you think that because some of their relatives were German that this makes them completely German?

I regret starting this thread seen as there have been alot of rubish remarks are being expressed on it.  Josephine-Charlotte was head of state in Luxemborg; the fact her brother was King of Belgian was a minor point.

But that's when it started to get interesting, surely? Anyway a lot of threads go "off topic". We haven't really spent 19 pages discussing josco's little feller you know, it wouldn't stretch that far. :)

How far do you think then?

I was speaking to a recently retired colleague and insulted him by saying that all he did now was mastabate at home and watch daytime tv.

"That's a lie", he said. "I never watch daytime tv".

Sorry OMJ, I can't help myself....

masturbate......

The name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha came to the British Royal Family in 1840 with the marriage of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert, son of Ernst, Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. Queen Victoria herself remained a member of the House of Hanover.

Note that it is not the House of Barnsley or the Duke of Littlehampton.

As I quoted in another thread earlier today, mothers know everything. (Certainly both my mother and the one I am married to)

You're right that a number of the present monarch's ancestors were German, however, a number of ththose Germans' ancestors were British. George I (the German Hanoverian) was James I's great-grandson, does this make him Scottish? I'm not saying that the royal family are some sort of pure-blooded Brits, that's not really possible (or desirable). I'm just questioning how a tiresome joke about the Queen being German has become some sort of accepted fact.

It's pretty simple Mr Losaplmas7 (what happened to versions 1 to 6?), the British monarchy are a joke in themsleves.

It just makes the joke more pleasing when the monarchy are associated with the Bosch. Two jokes for the price of one.

I won't argue with that.

Well, I might argue with the spelling but not the sentiment.

Ouch...that hurts. :)

As for the boy (Prince Charles), he must be torn between his monarchist and German roots......

On the one hand, he could choose to have the reporter (Nicholas Witchell) removed to the Tower of London in preparation for a beheading, or.... choose the German way of having the reporter put up against a wall, blindfolded and then shot....along with a dozen or so of his colleagues.

And of course the grammar isn't too distinguished either..."monarchy" is, "members of the royal family" are...

I do like a spot of pedantry on a Friday afternoon...

Pope died yet? Can't stand the suspense

At least Germans then were real men

<_< ....although perhaps something like, '...were at the time part of a major military power', would give your post a little more gravitas, and make it sound less like a homoerotic fantasy

Just a thought ;)

You boys and your macho avatars. :D

If the Earl can't enlighten us, perhaps there's a Belgian or two (famous or otherwise) who can.

At the risk of offending a nation, I think that will have to be "otherwise".

I was looking through Schott's Original Miscellany and I found this list!

SOME NOTABLE BELGIANS

Jean Aerts - cyclist

Jules Bordet - scientist

Hieronymus Bosch - painter

Thiery Boutsen - racing driver

Jacques Brel - singer

Pieter Breughel - painter

Ernest Claes - writer

Pierre Culliford - 'Smurfs' creator

Paul Delvaux - painter

Lamoral Egmont - statesman

Audrey Hepburn - actress

Cornelius Jansen - theologian

Roland de Lassus - composer

René Magritte - painter

Eddy Merckx - cyclist

Christophe Plantin - typographer

Plastique Bertrand - musician

Georges Rémi - creator of Tin Tin

Peter Paul Rubens - painter

Adolphe Sax - saxophone inventor

Georges Simenon - writer

Jean-Claude Van Damme - actor

I like the use of the word 'notable', they're not quite famous.

I scored 5/22 in the recognise the notable Belgian game. I think I did quite well.

Please look at the title "Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte(Luxembourg's QM)"

She was Luxembourg's Queen Mother (virtualy) and was head of state of Luxembourg with her husband, Grand Duke Jean until 2000. It just so happens that her brother is King Albert of the Belgians. If i had just typed "Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte of Luxembourg dies" there wouldn't be 5 pages of aload crap about belgians.

I don't know why you are talking about this Josephine-Charlotte bird. She's not even from Belgium!

I don't think we would have quite managed five pages of famous Luxembourgers.

or is it Luxembourgians? Or Luxembegians? Or Luxembuddlians?
