Noelle1966 0 Posted May 18, 2005 Actually I came across an old, but interesting website called Survivor's of The Titanic that listed 7 known titanic survivors that were still alive in 1998. Below are their ages in 1908 when this tragedy occurred: (correction: The tragedy occurred April 15th, 1912) Lillian Gertrude (5 ½ years old) Barbara West (3 ½ years old) Elizabeth Gladys (Millvina) Dean (10 weeks old) Lousie Laroche (3 years old) Michael M Navratil (3 ½ years old) Winnifred Vera (8 years old) Eleanor Iieen Johnson (18 months old) So far, I have only found confirmation of 2 deaths from the above list: Eleanor Ileen Johnson - died March 7th, 1998 Winnifred Vera died - July 4th, 2002 So it is possible that there are still 5 known survivors. Hi. I read in a 2000 edition of People magazine that Michael M. Navratil (the only left male survivor of the Titanic) passed away in the year 2000.
Anubis the Jackal 77 Posted May 19, 2005 An old lady named Dolly Knowles used to live in the same nursing home as my late Grandmother. When I used to visit, she had a framed picture on a sideboard of a handsome sailor in a RMS Titanic cap. I have no idea if he was a brother, lover or just a complete stranger whose picture she liked the look of. I never got round to asking her before she died as I was just a slip of a lad and her room smelled too much of wee and boiling chicken bones to hang around too long. Stayin Alive 26 Posted May 19, 2005 What is the dominant smell though, in such a circumstance; The chicken bones or the wee?
Anubis the Jackal 77 Posted May 19, 2005 Chicken bones predominate, with a faint tang of wee underneath... Not unlike the products of Mr Gallo

Guest Guest Posted June 1, 2005 So important, it was worth posting twice.
Lady Die 63 Posted June 2, 2005 But are any of them famous enough ? They are famous "by association" - because everyone's heard of the Titanic
Rotten Ali 600 Posted June 2, 2005 Its still very up in the air on this one! So to confirm: Cut and paste & re-ordered from previous posts and from the Survivor's of The Titanic web site. It appears there are 2 or more likely 3 known survivors still alive today... Lillian (Gertrude) Asplund: Born 21/10/06. She was 5½ years of age on The Titanic in 3rd class. She would be 98½ now. Lives in Alseda, Smaland, Sweeden. Barbara Joyce West (Dainton): Born 24/05/11. She was 10 months and 22 days old on The Titanic in 2nd class. She would be 94 now. Lives in Truro, Devon, England. Eliza (or Elizabeth) Gladys (Milvina) Dean: Born 02/02/12. She was 10 weeks old on The Titanic in 3rd class. 1 unconfirmed report has it that she may have died in early May 2005 but I can't locate any other news of this, so I believe she is still with us and living in Hampshire, England. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listing the deaths of the other 4 named on the website. Winnifred Vera Quick VanTongerloo: She was 8 years of age on The Titanic in 2nd class. Died - 4th of July, 2002. Michael M Navratil: He was 3½ years of age on The Titanic in 2nd class. Died sometime in the years 2000 or 2001. Lousie Laroche: She was 3 years of age on The Titanic in 2nd class. Died sometime in the year 1998. Eleanor Ileen Johnson Shuman: She was 18 months old on The Titanic in 3rd class. Died - 7th of March, 1998. ------------------------------------------ P.S. The tragedy occurred April 15th, 1912. Lady Die 63 Posted June 2, 2005 According to the Encyclopaedia Titanica (as of 31st May) these are the three still alive: 1. Lillian Gertrud Asplund (age 98) 2. Barbara West (age 94) 3. Elizabeth Gladys (Millvina) Dean (age 93) http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/discu...html?1117690249
The Four Horsemen 26 Posted June 2, 2005 I've also looked around the national, regional and local press and can't find any mention of Millvina/Millvena Dean having died - and the Evening Chronicle also mentioned that there were 3 survivors still going in Feb of this year....... Dr Strangelove 14 Posted June 2, 2005 All very interesting of course but as none of then are valid candidates for deathlist, isn't this all ultimatly wasted effort?

Dr Strangelove 14 Posted June 2, 2005 Well from earlier in this thread; But the point of the DL is not to select people who only become famous upon, and because of, their death. Quick, name a survivor of the Titanic or WWI. I'd like to see a return of a list of 50 people everyone had actually heard of, instead of half the selections being people who are only chosen because they're 90+ and are marginally well-known
Lady Die 63 Posted June 2, 2005 They are famous becaue they are SURVIVORS (of an historic event), so I think they are valid.

lospalmas7 12 Posted June 2, 2005 They are famous becaue they are SURVIVORS (of an historic event), so I think they are valid. Just because they were involved in an historic and famous event does not automatically make them famous. The Titanic survivors have done nothing to achieve fame in their own right and so should not be eligible for the DeathList.
Tuber Mirum 125 Posted June 2, 2005 They are famous becaue they are SURVIVORS (of an historic event), so I think they are valid. Just because they were involved in an historic and famous event does not automatically make them famous. The Titanic survivors have done nothing to achieve fame in their own right and so should not be eligible for the DeathList. Plus the fact that their deaths are unlikely to be that widely reported. (with the possible exception of the very last one, which will probably be a few years aways yet). These people have no chance of getting selected for Deathlist.
