Saudi Arabia's King Fahd has been admitted to hospital according to news sources. They have not been able to confirm his condition, but he has been in poor health since suffering a stroke in 1995. His brother, Prince Abdullah has been performing most of the royal functions since then. At 82 and in frail health for many years, could he be meeting his maker soon?

The Prime Minister has been informed and he is on standby with the announcement.

Fahd to Leave Hospital Soon

JEDDAH, 1 June 2005 — Interior Minister Prince Naif yesterday reported significant improvement in the health of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd and said the king would soon leave hospital.

 

“I have been to the hospital and would like to assure you that King Fahd’s health has improved greatly and God willing he will make a speedy recovery,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted the minister as saying.

 

Asked whether the king had started receiving visitors, Prince Naif said the doctors had advised him not to do so. “God willing, he will receive visitors later,” he told reporters in Riyadh.

 

Prince Naif’s statement followed earlier assurances by Prince Sultan, second deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation, who said the king’s health was improving. Prince Sultan also expressed his hope that the king would soon leave the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, where he was admitted Friday for medical examinations.

Luxembourg PM to quit if country rejects EU constitution!

 

LUXEMBOURG (AFP) - Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, whose country holds the EU's rotating presidency, reaffirmed that he would resign if his country rejects the EU constitution in a referendum next month.

 

"It is a question of basic decency towards the voters of Luxembourg," he told reporters. "If there is a 'no,' it is not the people who have to quit. It is up to me to go," he added.

 

Does anyone know if a failed referendum has ever driven a head of government to suicide?
