WW1 Survivors vs Titanic Survivors

Recommended Posts

The WW1 people outnumber the Titanic survivors but the Titanic crowd were babies and young children. Since none of them are really famous enough on their own we could pit them against each other in a kind of unofficial competition to find the last one standing...or being pushed around, or in receipt of life support... ;)

Good idea. I know there are three Titanic survivors but how many are there from WW1? I assume only UK ones will be included?

Why? What do you have against the French and Americans and persons from other nations?

Well Americans are idiots and we all know the French suck. ;)

But you do have the other nations as well.

Nothing ... but it might make the contest unfair to include all nationailites.

Millions fought in WW1 but only about 700 survived the Titanic.

You really need to start taking reality pills. Your logic is more askew than that of a dead boweevil dancing on a bushel of cotton.

A)Americans are not idiots, and you will notice they did not even enter WW1 until their experise was needed (yes I am rewriting history to suit my needs, t.t.)

B)Will people stop picking on the French and saying they suck just be cause they like to vacuum pull snails out of their shells for the escargot festival?

Millions? That's quite a margin of error there Janeo.

Can you be more specific? Are we talking a mere few, tens or hundreds?

Thankyou Mr Brimley, the French are generally very nice. I feel I must correct you on the snails though, they pull the them out with a little pointy stick.

May I join in, and helpfully point you here.

Doesn't give the numbers who fought, but does give dead, wounded and prisoners.

EDIT: This site gives more information, including total number mobilized!

As far as my research has gone, there are 3 survivors from the Titanic and from the First World War (global figures):

Possible Total: 313 at maximum.

Realistic Total: 212 at maximum.

So my money is on WW1 vets winning.

Sources : Titanic -Deathlist.net

: WW1 -My Webpage

These figure may not be very accurate - but what do you expect from me?

When I saw the subtitle to this thread "Last one standing takes the lot" I thought all the WW1 vets and Titanic survivors where entering a tontine.

"Tontine"

Wow! That's a word not heard often these days.

No. I've heard they arecoiming back into fashion though, so perhaps we'll be hearing it more often.

Last I heard, they were illegal in many countries including the UK.

I know they're illegal in most places (hmm, wonder what the legalities on the Isle of Man are for them).

However they still exist and from what I've heard all the fashionable set are dying to get in them.

If it's just over 212 world wide centurians against the three ninety something Titanic Survivors I reckon that's about fair. I'd say the last one breathing will be a war vet.

Don't be rediculous. That is like saying my Uncle Martha will die before My Uncle Walden just because he has less water retention. People kick off when they do and the war vets have the added problem of the longer term emotional stress which would add to their decease level factor wouldn't it? Or am I over simplifying generic pharmaceuticals again?

It's true that people kick off when they do. That doesn't mean every living person has the same chance to die in a given time interval. It's an observed fact that the older one gets, the bigger the odds one dies. This has two consequences:

1. If we have two groups of people, that are the same size, but different in average age, we expect the older group to go extinct first.

2. If we have two groups of people who have the same average age, but one is larger than the other, we expect the smaller group to go extinct first.

RMS Titanic sank April 14, 1912. About 700 people survived, none of who can be younger than 93.

WWI ended on Nov 11, 1918. Several millions of soldiers survived, none of who can be younger than 96, if we assume that 15 is practically the minimum age to enlist.

Considering that the WWI veterans outnumbered the Titanic survivors by 4 orders of magnitude, I expect them to outlive the Titanic survivors, especially if we take veterans of the Central powers into account as well.

Hein

Hein, not totally sure on yer maths there. There are Titanic survivors born in - I think - 1911. The youngest combatent from WW1 - assuming he was 15 at the end of the war - would be born around 1903. Anyone who actually fought in that war has to be over 100.

Statistically, I agree, the war vets superficially look a better bet. However, the Titanic survivors are the well-heeled sprogs of wealth who - that one night apart - have led probably easier lives than most of the war vets.

Oops, you're quite right. Let's do it again:

Titanic survivors were born in or before 1912, so the youngest can be 93.

WWI veterans, if we take 15 years as minimum age for enlistment in 1918, were born in or before 1903, so the youngest can be 102.

Statistically, I agree, the war vets superficially look a better bet. However, the Titanic survivors are the well-heeled sprogs of wealth who - that one night apart - have led probably easier lives than most of the war vets.

When we consider that the veterans were mostly men, who on average live several years fewer than women, I'm not so sure anymore about my conclusion. Perhaps I should do the calculation with real population statistics.

regards,

Hein
