themaninblack 2,112 Posted November 7, 2005 What is it with new poppies with the leaf on them? A marketing gimmick? Political corectness? Or a new wristband style fad to get people to give more money to the British Legion?
Windsor 2,235 Posted November 7, 2005 My guess would be decoration. In the North East of Scotland, we only get the plain red poppy with the black centre. One wears a white poppy to honour the allied soldiers shot for being cowards I believe.

Or a new wristband style fad to get people to give more money to the British Legion? I may be wrong, but I'm sure there were always two sorts you could buy and the 'expensive' ones had a leaf or two. It was obviously very successful until 1939

I really must return to my secondary school and beat the teacher who told me that. She waffled on about her white poppy for a whole period! She was also a feminist, socialist, pacifist, die hard labour supporter. So her class was always fun with me being a male monarchist.
maryportfuncity 10,662 Posted November 7, 2005 She waffled on about her white poppy for a whole period! Are we talking half an hour lesson or a few days out of a month? I'll get me coat.
Anubis the Jackal 77 Posted November 7, 2005 I'll get me coat. I think that you'll know where to find it by now.
BrunoBrimley 86 Posted November 7, 2005 They are meant as a way to remember those who have died and those who have served in the military primarily within battles. Profits from sales go to Veterans groups and war orphans/ then there is the poem IN FLANDERS FIELDS by a Canadian soldier of the name McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row That mark our place and in the sky The larks still singing bravely fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow Loved and were loved and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up your quarrel with the foe To you from failing hands we throw The torch, be yours to hold it high if ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
Cerberus 304 Posted November 7, 2005 I bought two poppies from a doorstep seller at the weekend, and we have since discovered we do not appear to have a pin anywhere in the house. Any ideas? (apart from "buy some pins", that is)
Entropy 5 Posted November 8, 2005 Well, if you've got a jacket with buttonholes, you could always use one of the buttonholes to anchor the poppy. Otherwise - you know - you could buy some pins...

Lady Die 63 Posted November 8, 2005 I haven't seen anyone selling poppies yet. We used to have some at work but people here are so mean we don't get them any more. (There are people here on 6-figure salaries but there was less than a fiver in the poppy tin last year) End of rant.
BrunoBrimley 86 Posted November 12, 2005 Yet another death....or has this topic fully croaked yet?

(apart from "buy some pins", that is) How weird .... not a single pin anywhere. I suspect you've been burgled & someone has stolen them all. I thought doorstep poppy selling was illegal? Cerberus 304 Posted November 13, 2005 No, I think that's only the case with opium poppies. I conceded defeat and bought a packet of safety pins - at village chemist prices, they cost me more than I paid for the poppies. They've been put in a safe place 'til next year. That could be a bit of a moot point in this day and age.
