Even in the darkest and coldest days of Jim Callaghan's administration the PM was personally respected and regarded as a decent human. Hind-sight only re-inforces that view. Guest Simon I Posted March 28, 2005 I'm new to this site's forums. I'm not registering as it takes too long! lol. However, I think this is an excellent (if slightly strange!) idea. Not only as a gamblers heaven but as a way to pay our respects to those people who have passed. I'd like to say rest in peace to Lord Callaghan, however I feel that it is somehow good that he has gone to his wife of 67 years, which although tough on the family is good for him. Mr Callaghan was not my favourite PM ever however I feel that his bad press was strictly unwarranted and he was left with the burdens that affected all leaders in the 1970s (even one of my own idols, Pres. Nixon). The economic crises around the world were just a product of consensus politics and the changing economic climate which could only be ended by the saviours of the 20th/21st century world the late Pres. Reagan and revered Baroness Thatcher. Which brings me onto my next point... um..regarding state funeral..i dont think Callaghan is in the same league as Chrchill somehow...maybe Thatcher will get one though!...to whoever said this...I truly hope so. Mrs Thatcher was beyond any shadow of a doubt the greatest Prime Minister ever to have lived and she saved Britain from being the 'sick man of Europe'. Hopefully (although impossibly) she will live forever, but as that is not going to happen let us hope that Mrs Thatcher does not appear either on this site (and definitely not as a success story) for decades to come! REST IN PEACE 'UNCLE' JIM..."a formidable" politician and PM who was, uniquely for a twentieth century PM trusted by MPs and the public alike due to his working class, avuncular persona. I seem to recall their daughter married Peter Jay the British ambassador to the USA. No - let's get this right: "He appointed his son-in law, Peter Jay, to be ambassador to Washington" Not quite the same thing... the nepotistic old tw*t.
