Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 final, led the tributes to Ball.

Let us not forget that when Hurst took the ball up the pitch for that all important third goal of the hat-trick Ball was in space to his right, unmarked and screaming for a pass.

I was totally shocked by the early death of the great Alan Ball today. How can this be? A perfectly fit 61 year old is taken by a heart attack when there are many hundreds of us, trying to find who out of the thousands of really ill or old famous people will be the next to die! Incomprehendable!!!
