Patty Andrews

Recommended Posts

The Andrews Sisters cropped-up today in a job I was doing at work. A quick flick through the internet and Hey-Presto - Patty is still going, aged 86. Trouble is, I can't seem to get any info on her health. Can anyone help out?

Someone's picked her in the DDP, but I've heard nothing about her state of health.

Anyway, what the hell is this job of yours that involves the Andrews Sisters?? ;)

Today, I'll mostly be working on a music catalogue. Been writing down some likely candidates from the 50s and 60s, but most seem to have pegged-out without letting me know. I got quite excited about Peggy Lee (surely I can't be the first?) when a website told me she was confined to a wheelchair. What that particular site failed to tell me was she was confined to a box in 2002. A couple of others I have noted for further investigation are Fats Domino and Andy Williams. All information on these or other pop past-its welcome.

I see...well, a quick trawl through this year's DDP entries reveals a few musical possibles:

Captain Beefheart (63, reportedly in ill health)

Jack Bruce (ex-Cream, 61, has had cancer)

Jerry Goldsmith (composer, 75, has cancer)

Vera Lynn (87)

Humphrey Lyttleton (83, but still touring)

Mitch Miller (93)

Oscar Peterson (jazzman, 78)

Tommy Steele (67)

Luther Vandross (only 53, but was in a coma for a while last year)

Given old jazz dudes seem to die with the regularity of Spinal Tap drummers it would seem good value to have at least one on any list. Not that I've heard of Oscar Peterson.

Ms. Andrews and her sisters, Maxene and Laverne, were one of the most successful women's singing groups, with 19 gold records and sales of nearly 100 million copies. The sisters began performing in the early 1930's when the Depression wiped out their father's business. In 1937, the sisters scored their first big hit with 'Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen'. In addition to 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy', their best-known songs included 'Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree' and 'Rum and Coca Cola'. The trio officially broke up after the death of Laverne in 1967, when a suitable replacement could not be found.

She will be 88 next year

Wasn't one of the Andrews sisters married to Billy Wright? And where does Eamon Andrews fit into all this?

I see. That should be an interesting accomplishment.

Well Bruno it would be even more of an accomplishment if

the dl got Mrs.Andrews on the 2006 deathlist and it would be a

even bigger accomplishment if she actually croaked. :(

 re: Patty Andrews

Patty and her husband of over 50 years, Walter Weschler, reside in Nrthridge, CA.

Patty is still active, enjoys telephone calls and lunching with close friends at favorite restaurants. She is actively interested in today's entertainment scene and new recordings of some of her songs by todays's stars such as Michael Feinstein. She is truly a "Living Legend"!, and a kind and thoughtful friend.

Anyone know an email address for Patty Andrews? I'd like to confirm the following legend of my youth. Back in 69-70 I lived in Woodland Hills Calif in a house the prior owners claimed the Andrews sisters had built/remodeled and lived in for a while. I recall the fireplace included a custom made grate fashioned with a large "A" in the center front, and the garage was actually a recording studio, less the electronics. Thanks in advance for your help... ^_^

Have we given any further thought to this candidate? She's someone that I'm looking at for my 2006 DDP and, although I can't find any particular health problems, life expectencies tend to be (although clearly not infallibly so) genetic. If so, she's long overstayed her welcome.

Just thought I'd revive some other suggestions since we seem to debating the same handful of people, despite our approaching deadline.

Humphrey Lyttleton (83, but still touring)

Forget him, he could easily see another 20 years. Though he did comment on one show that if they did too many tributes to recently deceased jazz musicians of his vintage they'd have no room for anything else!

Mitch Miller (93)

So I just saw an episode of the Twilight Zone called "A Piano In The House," and I swore I thought I saw a youngish-looking Mitch Miller in it... doing my research, I found out that it was this guy instead:

http://www.geocities.com/starparty1/morse/

Too bad he's not famous enough, he's a dead ringer for Miller in his younger days.

And I still think Patti Andrews would be a good DL candidate. Siblings don't tend to live as long as she has past each other (at least when they die of something genetic). Hell, Robert and Laurence Tisch died on the same day, two years apart.

As for Mitch Miller himself, probably just another "old guy" consideration. Perhaps even less valuable, since I've heard he lives a fairly conservative lifestyle, so his body is probably as good as it gets for his age. ;)

I don't know how common a practice this is (it's probably more usual than I realize), but they've prepared a space for Patty Andrews on the Andrews' family grave.

CP, when I found the Biggs info the other day, I also found a bit about Patty Andrews. Only thing was it's a bit misleading, I think. It looks like, initially, an interview with her to mark her birthday but I actually think it's an old interview with an added message of happy birthday.

See what you think:

There's interviews on subsequent pages, which leads me to believe that the article is a composition of interviews with women of local music over, which is more or less the title of the overarching piece.

I would guess that it's an old interview with the birthday information tacked on (probably as a lead in to the whole piece). There's nothing I've heard, though, that would indicate she couldn't still be doing interviews, I just don't think she did in this case.

Interesting find though!
