Herbert Wahler (wiki) may be dead.

Annoying for a lot of people who have him in deadpools. Nothing concrete, but there is a message on this Wiki talk page from someone claiming that he was their neighbour and that he died in 2023.

Confirmation. Died in November 2023.

Hmm, we should all check on people called Jenrick in Newark nursing homes....;)

On a surely unrelated note

The Rt Hon Robert Jenrick is the Conservative MP for Newark, and has been an MP continually since 5 June 2014. He currently undertakes the role of Shadow Secretary of State for Justice.

Don't facepalm because you made a comment out of ignorance and now you're embarrassed about it @Bentrovato.

It's not my fault you're an idiot.

Just for the Dutch. Lord knows what a British list would look like. Netherlands: 425,000 suspected Nazi collaborators' names published - BBC News

Has been a topic for months over here. In the end, it was decided at this moment to only publish online the index of people who were investigated, while the archives themselves will only be available in physical form for family members of the investigated people, as well as professional researchers.

Mind you, this list contains all people who were investigated after the war. The majority was never prosecuted or even accused as necessary evidence wasn't found, while a very large portion of suspects was only indirectly collaborating (for instance, local councilors and mayors often had to choose between following orders from the occupier while trying to spare civilians, or resigning and being replaced by more "willing" collaborators). There were also people who appeared to be collaborating, while actively taking part in acts of resistance.

Relevant topic in my field of work as well, so have talked quite a lot about it with colleagues in recent months.

Interesting, thank you.

I've found quite a lot of my family in this index (my heart sunk a bit when putting in a particular family surname and seeing them all listed). At least some are known to have been NSB members - one was an assassin for the NSB.  But at least one is known in the family to have been vehemently anti-Hitler (e.g. refusing an invitation to meet him) and I believe she may have been caught up in an investigation through her work, rather than through any actual collaboration.

That sounds interesting! As far as I'm aware, no one in my family appears on this list. I can imagine it could be shocking to see relatives listed on there, but ofcourse the list itself doesn't tell a complete story. Above all else, most people aren't just good or bad - especially during times of war.

If possible and when you feel ready, I'd encourage you to visit the National Archive to read the files about your relatives. While you might find information that could shock you, it might also inform you that (some of) your family members didn't partake in any kind of collaboration.

Always interesting to hear personal stories from the war.
