TheProfessor 0 Posted October 16, 2005 Possibly John Wooden? Don't know if he passes the fame test in the UK, but you'd be hard pressed to find a amateur (collegiate) basketball fan who hasn't heard of the guy. He only won 10 NCAA titles in twelve years with the SAME TEAM (UCLA), a feat which will probably never be duplicated. He's 95 now, but I don't know of an particular health problems. Interesting pick, I think.
Banshees Scream 110 Posted March 7, 2008 On the latest trips and slips ... Robert C. He was in the hospital on the result of a tumble last week, but recovered. DevonDeathTrip 2,360 Posted February 28, 2009 American basketball coach John Wooden, 98, mentioned many times before on DL, is recovering from a bout of pneumonia. Ed McMahon's chances of surviving more than a few days don't look too good, the several teams who've picked him on the DDP may be hoping he surives until expiring on 6th March - his birthday. TheProfessor 0 Posted June 5, 2010 he is now confirmed dead http://uponfurtherreview.kansascity.com/?q=node/2225 http://espn.go.com/ -- to see how well known he is. He's also a trending topic on Google (Then again, so is Krispy Kreme). Quote from a Pat Forde (ESPN) writer: "You could take him to the big city and make him a globally worshipped coaching icon, but you could never take the small-town Indiana out of John Wooden..." Globally worshipped? It should come as no surprise that we Americans could take someone famous here and claim them as a "globally worshipped icon" when they don't even get an obit in other industrialised countries.
